Help needed with Video Display

The monitor connected to my laptop does not display videos (DVD or mpeg files, etc.) I'm not sure exactly when the problem occurred, but a few months ago everything was working properly. I have not been able to identify a root cause.

Hardware:
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite Pro M15-S405
Op System: Windows XP SP2
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 170MP LCD

The monitor appropriately displays the desktop of the laptop. In addition, it is connected to DirecTV cable and works properly for TV. When I try to play a DVD or run an mpg file on the laptop, it displays appropriately on the laptop but not on the monitor. The monitor will display the Windows Media Player frame, but the display is black.

I have tried locating and downloading the video driver from NVIDIA to refresh it, but their website shows that they do not support the GeForce 4 Go driver. After going through the Toshiba Support troubleshooter, the site referred me back to the video vendor.

Any suggestions for will be greatly appreciated.

"The monitor will display the Windows Media Player frame, but the display is black."

This is proper. And a workaround is noted at this link.

This is not broken. And is working as designed (by Microsoft.)

Bob,
Your workaround worked for me. Thanks. I think that videos worked before on this monitor...maybe I was using RealPlayer.
Anyway, thanks for your help!
