Help Needed with Partition

Jun 10, 2005 4:25AM PDT

I'm running XP on a Compaq Presario 6027 with an 80GB HD. I also have an external Mextor 120 GB HD that I use for "One Touch Backup" (Retrospect).

I'd like to partition the external HD into 2 drives (i.e. 60GB each), one for backup and the other for MP3, jpg files.

The directions within Disk Management says to right click on the unallocated space, which in my case is only 2GB's, the balance (111 GB) is allocated space.

How do I partition the extermal drive into two 60GB drives?

The easiest way is to get Partition Magic and use the utilities...

Can't I do it on the cheap

Thanks for your recommendation, but isn't there a simplier (cheaper) way. Partition Magic is overkill, I don't need to run multiple Op Sys, I just want to move my jpg and mp3's to an extennal drive.

Cheap out.

Make a directory on the drive and sort your stuff according to the directory.

I figured I could default to doing it that way, but I was interested to seeing if there were any benefits to creating a separate phyical drive, especially since I use the Retrospect "One Touch" back-up feature on this external drive.

Since I'm not real technical, the One Touch back-up is really great.

Your decision at the end of the day.

I just use directories since it doesn't carry any limitations such as how to resize partitions as what I setup runs out of space.

In closing, remember it is a hard disk and is not a real "backup." You can read others in this forums asking how to recover their files so all I can do is warn you about the perils of this sort of copy.
