Question

help needed - no internet

Sep 5, 2017 9:18AM PDT

Hi everyone, I need help with a problem. My pc has been able to connect to the internet via ethernet for over 9 months, and so has my phone (for over 2 years). This week they both stopped connecting to the internet at the same time. However, all other devices can connect, both via ethernet and via wifi. When I click on the troubleshooter on my pc, it says "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS Server)". My phone is a oneplus one (android), and it simply says "connected, no internet". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clarification Request
Sounds like an ISP issue.

Just yesterday my TWC ISP connection was unstable for most of the day. OK now.

Your post is lacking all the details so as it stands you have an ISP to call and tell them it's dead.

Even if all my brother's and sister's phones and pc's connect with no problems?

Is it possible one or both of them have done this to you? Maybe they wanted to hog the internet bandwidth for themselves? Run the command ipconfig and post the results here.

block
Sep 5, 2017 9:59AM PDT

nobody blocked, I'm sure of it as my brother (the admin) is trying to help me find the problem. Also, the ethernet cable is plugged directly into the modem. I tried to switch the DNS address of google, and it didn't work.

The ethernet plugged directly into the modem?

That IP report looks entirely wrong. Unless this modem has a router in it.

Is there any antivirus suite? Many block the internet when they expire but the fact your phone stopped working is very strange. Did you happen to install an antivirus suite on it too?

Does the phone work at other hot spots?

That is half of what I asked.

The IP report still looks wrong and the question about phone working at other spots is unanswered. I know you might be stressed about this but it sounds like some block is in place but where? Most likely the router.

i didn't install anything new on either my phone or my pc, also my phone can connect to other hotspots without problems. The change was very sudden and without a clear cause

You would change the DNS on the router
Sep 5, 2017 10:10AM PDT

to 8.8.8.8

Also try moving the ethernet cable to a different port and see if that solves the problem. Right now I have a router that lost one of it's LAN ports and Now down to 3 for use on it. If you find your LAN port on router is bad (have sibling test with their computer), then connect by wifi instead.

router settings

Only two things can be wrong, and one is less likely. Either both of your devices have a software problem that won't let them connect, such as nto setting proper password for WEP or WPA security from the router,

OR, both of your devices are blocked at the router level, and you need to check it's firewall and permissions for users on the router.

I don't think an ISP can block an individual user behind a router, but that's a distant possibility. I would think very distantly. Usually if there's been some abuse of the ISP services, they block the entire modem from access to their system, or throttle it, or some other action, but not individual users behind the router.

update
Sep 5, 2017 11:18AM PDT

thank you for your reply. I tried connecting my laptop with the same ethernet cable of my pc, and the internet worked fine. Also I disabled the wifi on the laptop to make sure that internet was only accessed from the cable. Does this change your answer in any way?

laptop wifi devices...

....are notorious for failing, especially those broadcom ones that seem so ubiquitous in so many. Try connecting by wifi using a USB wifi device. If that works, then your wifi card in the laptop has gone bad.

That detail was missing.

Sounds like you need to investigate why theirs work.
