HELP!!! Need to Delete Duplicate Files, but which ones???

by dspasko / October 31, 2004 7:37 AM PST

After using duplicate file finder it was reported that I have 18,000! duplicate files, taking up almost 2.5 GB of disk space. I would like to know...

1) How did they get there?

1a)Is it a virus of some sort? (I have scanned with 3 anti-virus programs to no avail.)

2) How do I know which ones to delete? (In some cases there are 4 files of the same nameand last access date and these files are sometimes more than 2 years old and created within 10 or 15 minutes of each other.)

3) Is there a GOOD program I can get that will do this job without a lot of labour intensive work on my part? (I have tried Norton as well as one other program, cant remember name, and they cant tell me with any certainty which files to keep. I delete some of the duplicates at random, or by choosing the older file, or the file that has fewest accesses and then the application wont work)

Please help me to get hold of this problem. I am running 98 SE, 20 GB, PIII 733 system.

I tried one of those programs awhile back (forget wich one) that was supposed to remove uneccesary duplicates. Like in your case about 2.5 GB.

To make a very long storey short it ruind my life, programs, files and Operating System. Not impossible to recover from but deffinately no fun.

Drive safe. Have a great day.

My advice - Dupe Checker Pro

You must try Dupe Checker Pro. http://www.atory.com/Dupe_Checker_PRO/
It's the best duplicate files finder and disk cleaner. From the analog applications I tried, Dupe Checker showed to me the most wanted result and stability work.

Glary Utilities Duplicate files finder

I totally understand a result of 18,000 duplicate files. But after I tried Glary Duplicate files finder, everything turns out easy. filter options and convenient checkups, these make the job done in a minute.

Only delete duplicate files you made yourself (that is, in My Documents and so). And it's totally up to you which ones to delete. No program you buy knows your criteria to store things.

NEVER delete other files in c:\windows, c:\program files and c:\documents and settings (unless in a temp folder, but the usual cleaning programs already take care of that) unless you know exactly what you are doing. And obviously you don't, or you wouldn't ask.

Now for the other ones: not created by yourself, not in one of the 3 folders I mentioned. How many now?

2.5 GB on a modern hard disk of 250 GB is 1%. That's not much. Certainly no reason to take risks.
