Help!!! Need to acess data on old XP hard drive

Apr 1, 2005 1:14AM PST

I've got a very maddening problem!
The motherboard in my old HP computer died and I have got 40 GB worth of data on the hard drive that is still working.
I got a new XP computer and added the old hard drive as a slave, to get the data out, but apparently the old XP program is locking me out!
How do I get around this block, so that I can get onto the old data, to save it, and get it ready to be reformatted, for use in another computer?

Is this just a PERMISSION or OWNERSHIP issue?

Explain "apparently the old XP program is locking me out"

Whenever I go into the E drive, my old harddrive as a slave here, and clickec on the "E:\Documents and Settings\Owner" I get this message "E:\Documents and Settings\Owner is not accessible. Access is denied."
I have accessed many other files with no problem.
Also... there is some files... pictures, movies, etc, that just refuses to switch over saying it was copyrighted or in use with other programs... that is all baloney cuz there is no programs running them off the E drive that I know of and for sure they are not "copyrighted" cuz I ran them before in my old computer with no problems, moving them file to file etc with no problems... This happens only when I try to move it to the c drive or to run them on the new computer...

Take ownership of said directories and files.

As to "run them", programs do not move since about 1995, so reinstall those.

locked out by XP

I too have encountered this difficulty. Some 35 gigs of storage is unaccessible; yet some files 3 gigs, show up.
I had installed a password on XP before making my old hard drive a "slave" but there is no prompt to enable the password. Could it be XP that is objecting?
"Access is denied" is frustrating when the files are clearly there.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. The opening of each file is not allowed either! Any other ideas?

You didn't take ownership as noted in prior replies.
