Question

Help narrowing down an issue - System Crash

Jul 13, 2018 3:40AM PDT

I have a custom PC connected via HDMI to a TV. When I run the system, sometimes the system will freeze and then give me a blue screen with the case fans all revved up.

I haven't figured out exactly WHEN it does this, but it typically is when I am playing a game. Generally, if I reboot right away, it is likely to occur again soon after. So my thought is that the system is overheating.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 with stock Wraith Cooler which has had good reviews as far as cooling so I feel like it could be my video card. Is that possible? I have a MSI Radeon R7 250 which is clearly the weak spot as far as performance in my bench mark tests.

How can I accurately test to see what is overheating? (I would need something that tells me the temp but saves it in the event of a crash).

What else could be the issue?

While I agree so far another RECURRING and to me annoying issue is finding machine after machine with Ryzens and out of date BIOSes. What I've found is a lot of folk are scared of updating the BIOS but in the case of Ryzens, from my findings, updating is NOT OPTIONAL.

I have too many stories about this.

So be sure your BIOS is latest then try it without the case cover.

As to the GPU, it looks to be old. I would at the very least replace the heatsink compound on that GPU.
