HELP! My screen goes BLANK!!

by jonnykherenx / March 15, 2005 4:51 PM PST

Hi!
I've got a problem with my computer. The problem is when it gets into Windows XP appears to boot as normal until the welcome screen should appear. Instead, the screen flickers on an off quickly and then displays a blank screen, with a normal windows cursor in the centre. The system will do nothing from this point, no keystoke or combination has any effect. Exactly the same thing happens when I try to boot in Safe Mode from the F8 menu before windows loads, except that "Safe Mode" appears in each corner of the screen.

My specs:
Windows XP Professional SP 2
Pentium 4 1.6 MHZ
Gigabyte Motherboard GA-81DX
512 MB SDRAM PC-133

I have tried to reinstall my OS, updating BIOS and Chipset, defragmenting my hard disk. It is still not working. Anyone got a clue on how to solve this problem?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Johnny, At This Point...

I am curious how you defragged the hard disk if you can load to "normal" or "safe mode" Windows??

If you can't do anything at all, then I would reformat the computer and reload everything. If you've got a Recovery CD or Recovery Partition, then it should be fairly easy. If you don't have either of the above, then you'll need to the Windows XP CD. Put it in the CD-Rom, restart the computer, then use the CD to eliminate the current partition, reformat it, then reinstall Windows. Make sure you have all the drivers for your hardware and backups for everything else.

Hope this helps.

Have you tried Ctrl + Alt +Del combination? Unless there was also an error message you have not mentioned, that should always bring up the task manager and from there you can restart EXPLORER.EXE which is what provides you with your visible desktop.

Also, did you try booting to safe mode with command prompt? When it brings up the screen asking for the user hit ctrt-alt-del twice, then enter administrator as the user and leave the password blank (unless you have provided the Administrator account with a password). Once inside run system restore from the command line. Type in the following:

C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe then press Enter

That should bring up the system restore dialog box. Choose a restore date to right before the problem started.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
