When Windows runs out of "hard" memory it will transfer unused data to the "page file" to free up hard memory for the current process. The amount of space in the page file can be set by you. What you are describing is Windows is running out of page file space and will automatically allocate more disk space to the page file.
Search for "page file" in the Windows help section. You will find instructions on increasing its size.

Just recently I have been getting these messages that I am low in virtual memory. This morning there is a msg on the screen that says no memory. When I clicked it it said Windows will add extra memory or something.
I have NO idea what this is about. someone told me once there is a way to fix this on the computer, but HOW? Does anyone know please?
I have a Dell, not sure of the specifics, but fairly recent, with xp windows.
also I have just lost sound too, I have brought up the wee sound thing on the bottom right bar, and it is not switched off ??
