Help me with choose brand of speakers for home audio theater

Aug 29, 2008 3:48PM PDT

Hello all I am glad I found this forum. I would like to buy a home / speakers. I must say I am very new to this. I spent the day at best buy talking to the sales people. I did not buy I started reading some threads here. I really was thinking of going Bose acoustimass.
The reason I like them is the size. I do not want the large speakers.
I read many threads and people say you can do better then Bose. What brands/ models that compare to the acoustimass? II would like to get some opinions of others that know much more then I do.
I have a receiver already. I am not sure if it matters but it is a Yamaha htr-6150

Thanks for your time.

2 questions for now, more to come later
Aug 30, 2008 4:06AM PDT

1. what is your budget
2. are you willing to build over time?

(ex, get surrounds later, to be able to get a great value on fronts+sub. or forgo sub with same in mind... or must it be all at once?)

Thats a good question

I would consider building over time. I am in a one bedroom apt with a large living area. I will be in a house in 2009. So I am sure I would need to alter the setup. So maybe a sub could be dropped now since base and apt don't usually mix,

dropping the sub for now is a VERY SMART idea

a few things that can really vary in beefiness or size depending on the size or room are: size of display, amplifier, and sub(s).

however, you still never answered q #1

in all honesty, id almost put a hold on everything until you do move, if it will be as soon as next year. seriously. FWIW.

But, hey, if you want something now, I can help. You still need to state budget, and how flexible or inflexible that is.

Budget

Well I have my receiver now. I was going to add the Bose speakers so I was already looking to spend at least 1000 on them. I could go up a little.
I would just use this system in another room in the house and build a specific media room at the house.

Thanks for your help

Forget the Bose.

This is just my personal rec. FWIW, I've not listened to all, but a lot. I also am completely addicted to AV forums. I also have multiple degrees in classical music performance, and even have taught it in Europe. I am no longer involved in that stuff, but have built a dedicated multi row HT, as well as fine stereo system as a separate entity. Just to explain my background. if bookshelves, I recommend Ascend speakers. I don't own them, so this is not fanboyism.

Spend the most on the front. The surrounds, if properly setup, only provide subtle cues 99.9% of the time.

Ascend 340 center + mains, and 170 SE for surrounds = just a bit over $1.2k.

No sub

Ok I will look into that brand. I am new to this and I do not want to be blinded by the Bose name brand.
I also will skip the sub now and focus on the surround.

Another option for matched set
Aug 30, 2008 6:33AM PDT

Aside from the other good brands suggested by others, one online brand that has received very good reviews is Axiom (axiomaudio.com). I've read some very good reviews. The good thing about buying a complete set from one company is that they will be matched. I looked on their website and it looks like you can buy these speakers peace-meal in pairs, then buy the sub later.

If you definitely can not tolerate big speakers be sure to
Aug 30, 2008 9:47AM PDT

check the direct sales to consumers brand, Orb.

Very small speakers is an idea which has come into style before. The demo rooms are typically set up to show the mini size speakers to their best advantage. However, laws of physics do intervene & those laws can be played with only so much. To reproduce the bottom of the musical spectrum, some sizable box becomes necessary. Usually that large dark box can be placed somewhat discretely.

If you are moving, perhaps it is best to delay making decisions. Where you land may impose new parameters.

I listened to....
Aug 31, 2008 10:37PM PDT

a very tiny Mirage Nanoset Prestige 5.1 (S8 sub) system paired with a Denon AVR 2309CI receiver the other day and you know what? They sounded just like tiny little speakers. Sub sounded Ok, though. They were very bright and you can do better for less. My much maligned Onkyo's sound much better.
