do you see any drive letters or anything when you boot without the floppy disk in the drive?
when you format a drive, you wipe everything off the drive. you will have to take your computer to a place that knows how to unformat a drive to see if they can get anything back. the cheapest place is a friend who knows how to run Unformat from a copy of Norton Utilities or some similar program.

Hello...I've screwed up big time. I was trying to clear my computer and load Windows XP. I had a lot of stuff on my computer, so I was wiping everything off to start fresh. Well, I'm starting fresh alright. I followed the instructions found on this web page http://home.pactbell.net/dbk4297/fdiskformat.html I might have been alright doing so, but I don't have a boot disk. I don't think we got one when we got the computer. So, now I can get into DOS mode, but it doesn't recognize anything, including my CD drive. I can load up anything into the A: drive. I would really like to get my computer up and going. We do have DSL and a Linksys Router, I don't know if this may end up helping us. Can information possibly be sent through even though everything is wiped off the other computer. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get everything back to normal!! Thanks!!
