You need to find someone that can reformat your hard drive. Since you do not have the software that came with the pc you will need to purchase some especially the operating system. With Windows XP you could at least run a repair on the system.

By the sounds of it you have either been infected with a virus/trojan/malware wateva that has caused some damage to your operating system or 'somebody' has deleted the wrong thing and stuffed it up.

The easiest way would be to wipe everything and start again.

If you are running XP you would be able to just boot directly off the CD itself. Just put it in the drive and reboot the computer. You could use it to format your drive and re-install.

With Win2000, 98, you could go into safe mode and create a boot disk thru the floppy format menu.

Did you install any new devices? Applications? Drivers?
Uninstall same.

Have you used "Last known good configuration" in the boot option menu? Use k/b arrow keys to select this option and press "Enter"

System Restore in Safe Mode?
All Programs -> Accessiories -> System Tools

Run "SFC/ scannow" in safe mode?
Start -> rum -> Type "CMD" .
At command prompt type "sfc /scannow" Have Xp Cd ready

You should try a different keyboard on this machine. If the shift key or the space bar is sticking this can cause you to boot into safe mode. As well if the F8 key is sticking this will cause the boot menu to pop-up.

Keep it simple. I'd hate to see you reload a machine for something so trivial is all...
