Question

Help me choose a laptop

Mar 17, 2017 3:08PM PDT

Hi, since I've finished my school and looking forward to join a college, I'm looking forward to buy a laptop.
What I'm interested in is Surfacebook with performance base and the new Macbook is out of the question for me because of those thunderbolts and most importantly OS, I want a windows based system and using bootcamp is not a great idea. Carrying dongles around for those thunderbolts would be a bit too expensive and impractical for me in college.
The main issue is that looking at the hardware of Surfacebook, it's outdated and making the laptop a bit overpriced
What I'm looking for -
Battery life
Looks and aesthetics
Thin
Light weight
A decent gaming on the laptop
Using Photoshop
Using Premiere Pro
Using 3ds max and AutoCAD
But that can be used on any laptop, so decent performance for it.
Would appreciate students discount
Priced around $2000 to $2200 (including students discount)
OR better available in INDIA near or under RS.1,50,000
And should I wait for Surfacebook 2 ? Since I heard It'll be out next month.

Answer
No such machine. Why?

Gaming and battery time (life) is in contradiction.

That out of the way, look at the new Asus ROG with the 1050 GPU and SSD. Here that's under 1,500USD and is decent gaming.

Not actually..
Mar 17, 2017 3:19PM PDT

That's why I said decent gaming, I don't want gaming laptop, neither workstation. Which XPS 13 and surfacebook (Hoping for the gen 2) hits the sweet spot for me

Then I can't answer definitively.

Those models have dozens of varients (well the Dell does) and for the surfacebook, no programmer I know owns it for a few reasons. I guess it might be OK for a student.

Surface 2 showed up in 2014 so are you shopping used?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_Book#Timeline shows we are into 4th gen.

It's the Pro series
Mar 17, 2017 3:25PM PDT

That is for surface pro, a tablet, look at the orange one, that one is for the laptop. of which, second gen is yet to release, next to pro 4 the tablet.

Then you've talked yourself into

A model that is what we call RSN (real soon now.)

My fellow programmers just get gamer laptops. They are powerful, cheap and do well compared to "workstation" models. I hate to write this but your newer programmers tend to go with workstation models or surfacebooks.

Gaming laptops are wierd

I may be highly wrong, and you may suggest me on this.
I find gaming laptops ugly looking, thick and heavy. Also those fiber/plastic body is undefined, I like those metal covers of Surfacebook and Macbook, they're sleek and makes you look presentable. A gaming laptop is sometimes not the best way to show yourself.

We use these all the time.

And have apps out there. Now if I was into the video and web world I might consider some kool aid and an Apple.

Not apple
Mar 17, 2017 3:59PM PDT

I explained that above

Form over substance?

I hear you. It appears you know what you want.

IDK yet
Mar 17, 2017 4:01PM PDT

IDK about should I wait for SB2 or not, are there any more laptops out there which I'm not aware about. Are there some features or specs I'm missing which may help choose some other laptop.

- Collapse -
Sure. CNET wrote this one up.

Any words on SB2?
Mar 17, 2017 4:34PM PDT

After looking through a the links I guess I'll have to wait for SB2 and then compare it with XPS13 to decide which one to go for. So do you have any leaks, rumours or even theories on it?

None outside of rumor.
Mar 17, 2017 4:35PM PDT

You can find rumor sites on that.

in my opinion, the Toshiba Chromebook 2 is the best laptop for you

I don't think so

With 4gb RAM? and chrome OS, It'll be not at all a good option for me, I'll have to buy windows, and I'm looking at laptops with 16Gigs of RAM and 4GB chromebook is far away, and it also doesn't have dGPU.
