Help me build my living room surround sound system

by slaytn23 / November 21, 2013 11:08 AM PST

I recently inquired about setting up a Bose Accoustimass system in my living room but after I trial run in a secondary room, im not thrilled with the sound. I would really like to start from scratch and build a solid system for my family to watch movies and play video games in my living room. My Living room is roughly 20x21, I currently have a Sony Bravia 55 LED with a Sony 3d Blu ray player and will be picking up a playstation 4 soon. My wife doesn't want to see any of the speakers, so I need to hide them in the wall or ceiling. I want quality speakers that have great sound, with solid depth and clarity. Obviously I will need a strong receiver, Ive looked at so many, but im not sure what to get. I will most likely buy this in portions so my budget is a little skewed. Lets keep the total budget as close to 2k as possible but because im not getting this all at once we can go up to 2500...Id prefer to get outstanding speakers with the receiver and sub suffering a little if I had too...Thanks guys

I think the least problem is picking a receiver.

I think your problem is finding speakers. Finding speakers for the ceiling or wall are not as simple as enclosed speakers. With enclosed speakers, there are reviews in many places...but for ceiling or wall it maybe a different story. You have anything in mind? It would help to know a little bit about your feeling in these matters.

Doesnt sound too hopeful

Oldartq, I honestly don't have a clue about in ceiling speakers. I thought that there would be some solid speakers out there by now but I guess there really isn't or else you guys would know. Honestly If in could get the speakers to match the wall/ceiling colors then I could probably get her approval. In theory I could paint the speakers to match the surroundings. Lets take a step back and say my wife didn't care about seeing the speakers, what would you guys recommend that wasn't too large?

Pepe7, Love the WAF comment...if I didn't have to deal with that, this would be a lot easier. What would you guys buy right now with my budget, also how many speakers would I need for the room?

What oldartq said, and then some...

You will have to choose between aesthetics (WAF=wife approval factor), or, good sounding speakers/proper placement. All of the in-wall/ceiling options pale by comparison to what you can do even with proper speaker placement of a basic (lower priced) AV system.

Head over to the Dolby Digital web site and see what their diagrams look like for examples of surround sound system speaker placement. You need to find a way to convince the wife that there's no good trade off involved.
