Help, lots of problems, little knowledge-Thanks in advance!

If anyone would be able to help me figure out my computer I sure would appreciate it.

I have a Dell dimension E520 running win XP media center 2005 edition. a few weeks ago my husband decided to click yes on a very persistant pop up. The computer got infected with some sort of virus/worm, I don't know. I did a system restore, and I could at least access my programs again. That did not last long. I am having trouble getting into programs. When I try to open some programs a message box tells me that the file may have been moved or renamed. (not totally sore what it said). Now when I try to open some things I get the pop up box that asks you what program you would like to open it in. Such as when I downloaded avast and tried to open it it asked me which program I would like to open it in and it gave me a list. What do I do? I am sure there is some sort of worm or virus or trojan or something because most of my programs will not open, run really slowly, or just don't do anything when clicked on. How can I get the avast to run so that i can cure my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.
