okay, bluetooth is a new for of wireless communication.
it allows for bloototh enabled devices to communicate over short distances.
So for example you could have a PDA that wirelessly connects to your PC or laptop using bloototh, of you could have headphones with a cell phone that wirelessly cary the audio to your ears. Or say you have a digital camera with bluetoother and a laptop with bluetooth, then you can wirelessly transfer pictures, no need to plug the sucker in!
Basicly bluetooth is another form of wireless communication for devices. It's pretty cool, and it will get better (faster!) as time goes on.

WIFI is a wireless tech. Works exactly like your cell phone, except on a less wider basis. The way it works is a laptop (pda, etc) wich is WIFI enabled picks up a signal from a router, it locks on to the signal automatically, and allows you to access the net. The further you get away from the router, the less effective the signal. Once you are out of "coverage range" you lose the signal. There are two formats right now, b, and g.
b uses 11mbps transfer, and g uses 54mbps transfers. the g format also goes longer distance, so it is the superior format. Almost all laptops today come with built in b/g so you dont have to worry about chosing between the formats.
Centrino tech is good for integrating wireless for laptops, but it's not needed for good performace. use a Pentium M and it will do just as well 9and cost you less).

BTW, so you know, Centrino is NOT NOT NOT a type of proccessor. it is a combo of several components that are packaged together and are labeled "centrino", however all "centrino" systems run on pentium M. Thje only difference between Pentium M systems and "centrino" systems is that centrino uses Intel hardware, while Pentium M systems uses a pentium chip, and 3rd party wireless. Hope that helped!

A word about apple, dont buy one!
Sony and apple are overpriced for what you get. They dont deliver enouph power for the price you pay.
If you want a bargain and dont care about battery life, buy a dell, if you want portability....then look at HP, Toshiba, maybe gateway.

Sonys and Apples do cost more.

Apple is #1 in notebook quality and #1 in notebook service.

Sony is dead last in notebook and desktop service (according to recent Consumer Reports AND PC magazine surveys) but their quality is #3 I think for major PC brands.

You should stick to a mainstream PC or Apple if you are taking it to school and are not buying the notebook just for extreme gaming.

See hpshopping.com for the DV1000 series (14" widescreen -- shared video) And ZT3000 (15.4" widescreen -- 64mb dedicated video RAM max) -- see X1000forums.com (Compaq X1000 and HPZT3000 are the same) for details on the $100 custom order rebate, 6% APP college student discount, and other deals.
Also, shippping is free and you can qualify for 1 year no interest financing........

Depends what you are using your laptop for.

Alienware systems are awesome for gaming, they are expensive but you get what you pay for. I really don't know if they are reliable, I haven't got one myself but from what I've read I think they are.
As for their WIFI card, I can only say that the internal one (which is the one you really want if you are in college and plan going everywhere with it), I've heard it's not that good. Reception is terrible from what I've read. Finally, you should consider that alienware systems are really heavy, if you are going for a desktop replacement like the Area 51m. They weigh a little over 9 pounds. Battery life doesn't go over the 2:30 hours mark so you have a problem there too. Unless you plan on buying their Sentia notebooks (which have longer battery life, and weigh a lot less) and if all the things I mentioned above matter to you, you should look into buying another notebook. Also these laptops were meant for gaming, so if you are just using basic programs, you should stay away from alienware.

As for powerbooks I can only say their WIFI card is awesome. It's one of the best I've seen. You should consider on buying one if you don't mind the compability issues it has with all the programs out there. Just keep in mind that a lot of stuff out there is made for windows. They are great for video editing and everything related to multimedia. Battery is in the range of 4-5 hours, depending on the notebook that you chose.

So it really depends on what you are looking for, personally I don't like Apple, but that's just me.

I don't think Apple or any particular PC company is superior in wi-fi -- the internal wi-fi cards or external PC cards are built by manufacturers like Intel, D-link, Linksys, etc -- if you get a built in wi-fi card with the 54g standard (backwards compatible to b) you should be fine.

It is more important that you get a quality wi-fi router to transmit the strongest signal possible ........

So, don't make your decision on a notebook based on wi-fi -- just make sure it has a built in 54g/b wi-fi card and that will hook up fine to any good wi-fi router (but some are better than others for maximum transmission distance -- see the Cnet wi-fi area for best ratings on the wi-fi router..............

Actually I've noticed powerbooks have less interference than other laptops, when it comes to WiFi. I read it comes with a special "Something" that reduces interference.

But I totally agree, don't base your decision on which laptop has the best Wi Fi, cause even, in my opinion, if powerbooks have great Wi Fi cards, any other laptop will provide a decent Wi Fi card. If not you can always buy an PCI card, they are not expensive and some may provide longer range.

And yes it's not all in your internal card, it also depends on the queality of the router.

Apple has the Airport wi-fi router but that can be used on PC's also (so that does not make the decision on the notebook). If you don't need specific PC software adn don't need to sync with work as much and if you are willing to pay a bit more (for #1 quality and #1 service) you will get a great notebook from Apple (but I would get a 15" or 17" Powerbook not an Ibook and both of those are in the $2,000-$3,000 price range) -- you can get a great PC 15.4" widescreen Pentium M notebook for $1,500 or less.

My 54g built in minipci card (g backwards compatible to b) is on the 2nd floor of my house in a bedroom facing the street. I have had no drops or cable model reboots necessary once I updated the wi-fi router firmware (at their website) and updated the drivers for my notebooks Intel proset utility and the wi-fi card.

I use it all the time on the 1st floor in my living room and I have used it in the backyard also with no issues.

So choose the notebook on other factors but make sure you get a 54g/b wi-fi minipci card built in and focus on a good wi-fi router to transmit a strong signal.

Alright let me break it down cuz i just learned all this in the last 4 months cuz i also bought a laptop. First of all powerbooks and ibooks are apple pc so if you want to deal with mac then go for it. As for buying an alienware, well they are a little more expensive than the powerbooks. Maybe a Toshiba Satellite. Ok, now here are the answers to your questions:

1.could someone explain to me what bluetooth can do?
Bluetooth is a type of wireless capability that is usually enabled in cell phones and in some laptops so you can connect some devices. It's not the biggest hype but it works and it also comes in most apple notebooks.

2.could someone plz explain the whole deal with WIFI?
WiFi which stands for wireless fidelity is the able to use transmitted signals over the air at different speeds. In conclusion it is wireless connection which can be obtain by using a wireless router.

3.i mean how do i get it from universities' router? and how far can i go away from it?
Well some universities enable wireless router but not all because the range isn't the best. The most you can go with the best wireless router is probably 150 feet without any obstructions as in walls and other interferences. It is most likely that you will be having an wired ethernet connection for your dorm room so don't worry about it as much but still consider it a priority.

4. what are all those G a/b types?
By "G" I think you mean "Ghz" which means a strong frequency operating over 1,000 megahertz. Kind of like a cordess telephone. As for the "a" which is the fast wireless connection in some standards but expensive and operates at a 5.8Ghz and can give you internet at the most of 108Mbps. While "b" is the best for budget but transmits at 11Mbps and works at a frequency of 2.4Ghz. Now, "g" is the common zone because it is affordable and as fast as well which operates at 2.4Ghz and lets you download at 54Mbps. This is one of the best standards for now. I've used this connection and it's as fast as my desktop pc. I recommend it.

This is something you should consider if you can use a wireless connection. By the way really consult the cnet or some other good site guide about the right selection of a laptop. Get one with over a 4 to 5 hour battery life if you can and good graphics. Get a 40GB hard drive, less than 5 pounds, and any other thing you might need

P.S. Enjoy college and the girls cuz I can't go but I hope buying the right laptop things go smoother for you. Peace.
