HELP! Laptop doesnt charge!

Jul 14, 2009 11:11PM PDT

I bought a gateway laptop ml6703 about 3 years ago. Ive had to replace the charger 2 times already because after a while they just didn't charge my laptop. So I just got a new one and now every few minutes it stops charging for a second or two but then it charges. Could this be a hardware issue in my laptop or perhaps is the new charger i bought defective?

Thanks!

(PS - im not sure if its relevant but my last charger that didnt charge anymore, whenever i plugged it in, I heard a beeping noise from the box part of the charger.)

At 3 years you have at least set the old battery

Into your recycle bin or left at the battery recycler counter. If not it is too likely the battery is dead now at 3 years. It turns out that in the rush to low prices the cycle count of the battery was pulled down to 300 and there it is. The old battery taxes not only your charger but the laptop's main board.

Now that we know what parts are in play, replace from cheapest to most expensive in this order stopping when the problem goes away.

1. CMOS battery (yes it is time for this one too.)
2. Charger or brick.
3. The big battery.
4. The laptop's main board.

There are so few parts to this that you wonder why there is any question about what to replace.

1. CMOS battery (yes it is time for this one too.) -- Whats this?
2. Charger or brick. -- I just bought a new one so this is not the problem
3. The big battery. --- this is the regular battery that comes out? -also, a few months after i got my laptop i got an extra battery from gateway - i havent used it in a while and i guess i can use that one instead of buying a new one?

Thanks!

If you don't know a part ask a search engine.

Research it to avoid service counters. I know that you could find a manual on your machine or a similar model about this small cheap battery worth a shot at changing. I list it because it did help once and while some will choke on it not being the cause it was a few times so it's now on the list.

A new charger can be defective.

Why not try the newer battery.

Hope you don't get to the last item.
