Help installing Xubuntu inside Windows 7...

Sep 16, 2009 5:52AM PDT

I've been testing out Xubuntu on my very small 1GB flash drive and figures after one day it's already full to the point I can't do anything on it. After trying and failing to install Xubuntu to my 8GB flash drive (probably because it's a U3 drive) I decided to try installing it on my computer even though I dreaded the idea with all the bad luck I've had with dual-boots in the past including one where Ubuntu ruined my Windows partition and reformatted my media drive full of a couple hundred GB's of my stuff, but anyways... I put the CD in my computer and selected the "Install inside Windows" option, it installed perfectly fine with no problems and I restarted my computer and I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I saw the boot manager come up asking which OS I want, no errors or anything for once. I selected Xubuntu and I got this screen... (http://tuybwa.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pKAyL40o2sbn4fQUkN0HuDXPW2ZIvoCUjGC86jER9SYJpCv_tvxl-07vHV0oqrNkO60OyW2SykpBkcbJRUp0onQ/p_00003.jpg), I restarted and tried one more time with the same problem, restarted again and selected Windows 7 instead and here I am now.

My computer:
MB: MSI K9A2 Platinum
CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core 2.6Ghz
RAM: 5GB Total (2x 2GB OCZ, 1x 1GB Kingston) 800Mhz
Video: Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT 1GB VRAM
HDDs: WD VelociRaptor 150GB 10k RPM 16MB
Hitachi Deskstar 80GB 7.2k RPM
WD Caviar Black 1TB, 7.2k RPM 32MB

RE:Help Installing

Try using Wubi, it installs Linux like a regular windows program. It does not even need partitioning. The only thing is your max size for install is 30gb. But that should not be too much of an issue. Any you can use it for other kinds of Linux (You can install all versions made by Canonical)

That's what I had used...

But it always gave me that error, in the end I went back to the normal installer (with the partitioner and all that) it still said it didn't detect another OS then I noticed it was looking at my media drive, I rebooted the computer and unplugged my media drive and then it looked in the proper hard drive where Windows 7 was and I simply shrunk that partition till I had 25GB for Xubuntu, which will be enough since it will hold nothing but the OS. So all in all I got it to work, and Windows 7 still works like it should. Though I doubt I'll be booting Windows anytime soon now that I'm growing used to Linux.
