Hi Curcat

It's been so long since I installed Spybot that I don't remember the questions it asks you. If it is asking you if you want to INSTALL TeaTimer, Yes, you want to install it BUT if it is asking you if you want to turn it on immediately I would NOT until you are familiar with Spybot and with exactly what the TeaTimer does. You can find it and enable it later after you read the whole tutorial. TeaTimer can be found in the "tools" section under "residents". Make sure you read the whole tutorial and have a Merry Christmas.

HELP Installing Spybot....Tea Timer?
Dec 24, 2004 10:30AM PST

Roddy..
Prior to download, I refered to an older post from you that I had saved. You stressed the importance of becoming "familiar" with it first.. which I have all intentions of doing.

The setup box has 2 available items to check off. One is pre-checked.. 'Use IE protection (SD helper)' and the other box (unchecked) says 'Use systems settings protection (Tea Timer).

While waiting for an unexpected reply here.. you came through again!!.. I went to Google. I kept getting explanations that it was more for the advanced user. Since I have the space (512), but not the knowledge, I thought it wouldn't hurt to check it off. I don't know if it would be a waste of space, since I am far from an advanced user. Does any of this rattle your brain? And by having the "Setup" collapsed for a long time now on taskbar, will this now cause a problem?

I know I threw alot at you, but anything you could answer would help. Have I confused you?

BTW.. Merry Christmas!

Tea Timer in Spybot
Dec 24, 2004 10:58AM PST

Roddy this is from Leigh.edu site which describes what I had been referring to above. 'The Tea Timer setting is best for experienced PC users who want to exercise more control over changes made to their system. It requires 5 megabytes of system resources and results in considerably more pop-up warnings that need to be evaluated. The messages may not be easy for a casual PC user to interpret.'

Knowing that the information is as good as where it comes from (???).. or something like that.. I don't know if it is to be trusted.

What I think
Dec 24, 2004 11:01AM PST

it is doing it asking you if you want to enable it. DON'T check the box then. We can always tell you how to enable it later. I do NOT use TeaTimer myself for a couple of reasons that I'm not going to into now but I'm 99% certain that TeaTimer will still install but not be enabled right away. SO leave the prechecked box checked (You DO want the SD Helper enabled)and the TeaTimer unchecked for now. I doubt if having the installer setup minimized will make any difference but if it does by any chance, you could always start over and redownload it. Make sure you check for updates before you run a scan and if you have any questions about the scan, I would ask them in the Virus and Securities Forum simply because there are more people in there that are familiar with the settings.I will be on and off the computer tonight for a little while longer, an hour or so anyway if you have any more questions. Merry Christmas to you too.

Spybot.. Tea Timer
Dec 24, 2004 11:59AM PST

It's a done deal! Did leave it unchecked. First and only thing I did was updates. It's late here and as you suggested, I want to read the tutorial prior to scan. At this hour, I'm unable to take much more in! My brain is on overload at this point.

I can only say AGAIN.. Thank You!

You're welcome Curcat and

like I said, if you have any more questions about setting it up or anything just post in a new thread in the Virus and Securities forum and one of us will help you. You've got to be a little more careful with what you have Spybot "fix" the first couple of scans than you have to be with Ad-Aware so don't be afraid to ask. These is also a fix for the DSO Exploit if you see that but that's another day. There is also a recovery portion of Spybot in case anything gets deleted that shouldn't have. Have a great holiday. Roddy..

I didn't want to start a new post in Virus & Securities forum, since I had started this already. Will do so when the "subject changes"..as I am sure it will.

I fear I may have messed up before I even began. You said in prior post 'There is also a recovery portion of Spybot in case anything gets deleted that shouldn't have.' I was asked, at some point, if I wanted Spybot to backup (not sure exactly how it was worded) the registry, I think I said "no". Dialog box (?) said it wasn't necessary. Can I presume this is the "recovery portion" you were referring to? (Please say no!)

I have yet to scan. I have been reading the tutorial, which seems to lack alot. (If my memory serves me correctly, Lavasoft's manual has 52 pages! Spybot had me a little confused.) I have no plans of deleting anything, until I fully understand it. I went to some websites that had further explanations, but not much detail.

I am thankful for Paul's post regarding immunizing. I am now wondering if there aren't other "unspoken" instructions. Despite my hesitancy, I do take solice in the fact that I can come here for help. And appreciate it VERY much.

Thanks again.

Hi Curcat
Dec 25, 2004 11:44AM PST

I hope you had a nice Christmas. I have had Spybot for so long that I honestly do not remember the questions it asks you when it is installing. I wish you could remember exactly what the question was about "backups". You asked me about TeaTimer and SD Helper and we decided that you want the keep the box checked for SD Helper and NOT checked for TeaTimer. You didn't say anything about backups last night or I would have told you to say yes to that. You can put it into advanced mode and check all the settings but I really didn't want to you to use that yet. I thing you should be in the default mode which you can check for on the top of the interface. You DO want backups made in recovery for anything that is "fixed" and that way you can recover it if necessary. I would be surprised if it asked you that when installing but , like I said it was so long ago I don't remember. You will PROBABLY be OK in the default mode but be careful what you delete (fix) and MAKE sure that a copy is in the Recovery after you fix it. IF it's not, then I'm going to have to tell you what to set in advanced mode. I've had a long day again today and I'm getting off the computer shortly. Talk to you soon.

Re: Tea Timer

For my part, I leave Tea Timer off after having once completely bollixed up a program install by allowing Tea Timer to block part of the install. You have to know exactly what the process Tea Timer's suggesting be blocked before you can be totally comfortable using it.

For the record, Tea Timer is always installed when Spybot is. If you don't want to start it at initial install, you can always go back and enable it by clicking on tht "Tools" tab on the left side of the main Spybot screen and then clicking the "Resident" button in the next screen...

Just to add to what's already been said, Curcat:
Dec 25, 2004 1:23AM PST

Make sure to immunize your system from the "Immunize" button on the main screen both after initial installation of Spybot and after any update of the program that updates the program definition files; that'll give you maximum protection.

And, make it a point to check FREQUENTLY for program updates!

"Immunize" button
Dec 25, 2004 2:20AM PST

That is a very good point Paul and also what some people don't realize is that after they click on the immunize button on the main page (looks like a brick wall on the left side) they also have to click on the green + mark in order to actually immunize once they got on the immunization page.(top of the immunization page) That's a very common mistake that people make not realizing there are actually TWO buttons to push to immunize.

Guilty as charged, Roddy (in the beginning)!

it isn't explained that well in the tutorial either. I usually stress that in the Virus and Securities forum where I spend most of my time but it was late last night when I was helping Curcat and I failed to explain it. I think I might have had Santa on my mind. Grin

Roddy.. I'm really sorry. I thought I knew how this all worked and it looks like I may have buried my earlier post. Will pay more attention next time. (I feel like a kid in kindergarten!) It's not an earth shattering question, but would like to know if I messed up with Spybot.

Sorry, but replying to a 4 year old discussion with advertisements for the Tea beverage doesn't work.
