Any notebook with a firewall port can do video editing.
However, the Sony notebooks are optimized for using their Sony camcorder products and Sony memory stick cards. If you have a Sony camcorder that was their intention (to get you to buy all Sony products).
Apples are outstanding for video editing if you get a model high enough that has everything you need. The Apple Powerbooks are over $2000 but they have a 17" LCD model that weighs only 6.9 pounds (Steve Jobs used that in the hospital while having pancreatic cancer surgery). A similar PC notebook would be 9 pounds or over.
My Compaq X1000 series Centrino Pentium M notebook is 6.5 pounds with a 15.4" widescreen.
If you really have a group of friends with Apples that may be the way to go for you.
Otherwise, you can get a great Pentium M centrino notebook with a 15.4" widescreen like the Toshiba M35 series or the HPZT3000 series or Compaq X1000 series (same notebook -- different cases) -- but make sure you get firewire, dedicated video (not shared or integrated) and choose your LCD size and weight carefully.
I am having the hardest time deciding which to buy.
I am a graduating law student, and most of my computer usage consists of MSWord, Excel, some money management programs, email, internet browsing and occasional powerpoint. I have only used PC notebooks in the past. I currently own a Sony vio. I have always wanted an IBM T series and thought T41 would be perfect for me.
But, my husband does video and music editing in addition to the standard word, internet, email usage. His friends all seem to think that Mac is the way to go.
I am very confused. . .Is there a PC notebook that would accomodate both of our needs well and stand the test of time? Or do you think that we're better off with converting to Mac? Our ideal budget is about $1500.
I have personally had very bad experiences with gateway and compaq labtops. They broke so fast. My sony has withstood the test of time (it's about 3 years old and never gave me any problems) but I think I need a new tech.
Any help would be appreciated.
