HELP!i tried removin ie11 2 renstall it & can't get it back!

Mar 20, 2015 2:18AM PDT

I noticed that it didn't have an uninstaller so, I removed the check mark on the Internet Explorer 11, 'Windows Feature checklist'. That didn't remove it so I removed some of its files. Now when I go back to download ie11 from microsoft it says I already have a newer version installed!

What do I do?

Odd move.

We know that IE is part of the OS and is not to be removed. Did you try SFC next?

SFC and it's use is on the web so I don't duplicate that here.

What is SFC?
Mar 25, 2015 7:53AM PDT

I'm sorry I looked on google for what sfc is and could not find out what program that refers to. I'm not asking for a tutorial on it as you've already indicated they are on the net, but is sfc the programs actual name? I REALLY hate using firefox i love internet explorers interface and want to get it back. No windows restore disk came with my custom pc so reinstalling it would cost me the price of windows.

I put What is SFC on google and ...
Mar 25, 2015 7:59AM PDT

"System File Checker is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files. This utility is available on Windows 98, Windows 2000 and all subsequent versions of Windows NT family of operating systems."

I see a wikipedia on that and more on use.

The program's name is SFC.EXE or SFC for short when we are talking repairs like this.

As to no restore DVD I can't guess the backstory here. but Windows DVDs are free to download legally! It's not a secret.

Here's a link on that. http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/

So missing media is a non-issue for SFC use.

-> In parting, since there's so much malware out there what's your disaster plan look like?

I dump my harddrive onto file sharing websites
Mar 26, 2015 4:49AM PDT

I also put a physical backup onto another hard drive but that is more rare. however I have good virus protection and while its still possible that maleware will take me down my flashdrives alone have the files I NEED to keep even though they are not the system repair files.

I do thank you for the information about those windows dvds though I had no idea about those thank you very much.
(and the reason why I didnt get a windows restore disk is because they didnt give me one I just assumed It would come with one because the dozen or so pcs Ive bought in my life did so I just thought they would charge me for it automatically and include it.)

I've run into folk that feel entitled to restore media.
Mar 26, 2015 4:55AM PDT

They often are a bit touchy on the subject. That is, even if you show them how to create them they are often of the mind they are "owed" such by the makers, Microsoft and a few "Bill Gates."

Given the decade or more since such shipped with the PCs, it's still one for the books.

FYI...just for fun, I tried to do that
Apr 1, 2015 7:12PM PDT

and ran into a glitch or two. It does require that you enter a product key and language. That makes sense as it would need to know what disk label to look for. The key I entered is one I have from a full hologram copy of Windows 7 Pro but an OEM version we bought to make a PC for a local school. After entering the code, I received a return message that said I'd need to contact the manufacturer with my request so I'll presume the free download only works with retail products.

Yes that happens.

If folk don't have their restore media or a backup copy of the installed OS to restore from, damage to the OS can run so deep you can't fix it with the normal routines.

Not much has changed except attitudes over the years. I find more and more folk feel entitled to a free Windows. That looks like it will happen with Windows 10.

If you can't locate your backup or restore media and the maker won't supply such, maybe it's time to try Windows 10 for free on this one?
