HELP ... I deleted LMHOSTS.SAM from my "ETC" folder

While updating my Hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC) ... I lost the LMHOSTS.SAM file (4MB) ... is that a file that can be emailed ... and is it really important? If it can be emailed as an attachment ... whould appreciate a "helping hand" - thanks.

The .SAM is not used. It's a .SAMple.

The real file that is used is the one without the .SAM

The .sam file is on your Windows CD for easy retrieval.

I don't think I ever had a LMHOSTS

But I googled it and found the default M$ file - I copied that into a notepad txt file - placed it in the ETC folder and renamed (left off the .txt extension - seems the right size ... but strange you would mention that there should be a LMHOSTS file ... all I ever had was LMHOSTS.SAM ...

Yup and rarely used.

The LMHOSTS and LMHOSTS.SAM are optional for most systems.

Too bad you didn't tell what caused you to ask about it.

In reply to: HELP ... I deleted LMHOSTS.SAM from my "ETC" folder

Don't worry, LMHOSTS.SAM is simply a sample file containing only plain text and isn't used by the operating system. Unfortunately it seems this forum does not allow the sending of attachments, and you have elected not to let other members send you emails in your profile settings. Otherwise I would send you a copy of the file. How about temporarily allowing emails in your profile, I send you the file, then you disable emails in your profile again?

Thanks, but I think I got it ...

See my reply to R. Profitt ... this is the file I found on the net ... http://www.iata.csic.es/~fernando/doc/lmhosts.sam

I'm thinking that was all I had, since I don't have a network.
