HELP: high optical zoom, at least 4megapixels, and compact?

Nov 11, 2004 5:26AM PST

How can I have it all? I'm new to the DC world, and take a ton of pictures. I need something I can carry with me on fun outings with friends that allows for fast snapshots, but I don't want to give up on having a good zoom. Also, I am an avid outdoorswoman and like to take landscape shots from time to time, too. Sometimes I will blow up a picture to 8x10. How can I have it all?

I've heard that some compact cameras are built so that you can add on a larger lense when you want. Is this true?

What recommendations do you have? Please help!

Thank you in advance.

Ignore my red m. I just returned from an 8 day trip and the refurb Kodak DX6490 (about 319 bucks) did well. It's a 4 MP and 10X Zoom and I'd get it again. Look at the replacement versions Kodak has rolled out too.

"high optical zoom, at least 4megapixels, and compact"

Yes, Yes and No

The most compact high optical zoom is the 8X Nikon Coolpix 4800 (4.2 x 2.6 x 2.1 inches & 10.4 ounces).

The next most compact is the 10X Kodak DX 6490 (3.9 x 3.2 x 3.2 inches & 13.4 ounces)

Some digital cameras are capable of handling an add-on multiplier lens. These lenses tend to be quite large.
