Help - Finding it where

Feb 26, 2004 10:36PM PST

I have a friend from another country. as most of you know not every country has equal rights and such for woman. Within the last week she got into a car accident and had a bill of 1,500. Unfortantly she cannot afford this bill and is looking either to her friends or to find some way to pay for this bill does anyone know of a way or a place that helps?

John, consider that in the first post they say that they are a college student. Then you see problems with punctuation and word spellings like:
Unfortantly she cannot afford
because your a woman
responce to try and find someway to help her because im a college student.
O.K., the thought comes to mind that they may be a college student but not speak english as a first language and/or they were careless. But notice the perfect use of either/or in "cannot afford this bill and is looking either to her friends or to find some way..." and the use of the phrase "as most of you know not every country has equal rights...".
It seems to me that it may sometimes hard to believably convey the idea that you don't speak a language well because there are so many ways to "trip yourself up" by doing something that you shouldn't have done if that were the case.

Hi, Denial
Feb 27, 2004 4:20AM PST

Perhaps if you gave us a few specifics of your situation you would get a more useful response. Where are you and she located? What are her living circumstances? What is the pill for? What currency is it in?

Information like this would give people more to go on.

Good luck,

Dan

Re:Hi, Denial

Don't think he will respond as he said to Glenda after her ridicule, "....and please dont respond to this anymore no one has even been remotely helpfull."

Granted he has not given very much info and your post to him may clear up a little if he would reply. He indicated his friend, a female, had a car accident and has a bill for 1500. He indicated medical insurance is hard to get for women in third world countries. Then he quit responding in this thread after his above reply.

From his clues it indicates his friend:
1. Had a auto accident. No indication if in the USA.
2. Has a 1500 ($)(yen)(peso)(marks)(lbs) bill.
3. Bill could be for medical expenses administered to her, or passenger, pedestrian, other auto occupants.
4. Wanted info to help her...apparently organizations or individuals that would help pay the bill.

Well, if the medical bill was incurred by her accident in the US, she could do like many foreigners do around these parts...don't pay if they cannot afford it. If it happened in a third world country, he may be looking for the address of uncle Bill G., Oprah, and the many USA organizations (including churches) that provide aid to third world countries that may help her if written to.

Hi John,
None of those organisations will send money out willy nilly. They will want to know a great deal more information than this person is willing to share with us.

Soaking her hands in Palmolive liquid while gabbing with the gals in the beauty parlor (I'm taking liberties here) often does wonders for a woman's outlook and inspiration. I'm sure she would find much sympathy there and guidance on how to deal with her problem. If not, at least she got a good manicure and softer hands, and with that she might find a good man (you know, the kind with money) that will help her out.

Please post again with more details ...
Feb 27, 2004 8:33PM PST

You will see from the responses that we cannot help unless you tell us more about the circumstances.

You must please post again giving as many details as you can - you have given very few so far.

Please understand that there are people who post to the Forum with queries that are not genuine. I think your query probably is genuine, and you can already see that Forum members will help you, but you must give more details - because you have given so little for us to consider. No-one can offer advice if they do not know what they are advising about.

Therefore please post more details. It might be that we cannot help, but at the moment it is impossible to say because you have not given us enough information.

I think that you are "genuine" - because I fail to see what you have to gain by your post otherwise - so please post more details and people here might then be able to help you.

If he chooses to give more details, then perhaps we might (or might not) be able to address his problem.

You seem to be more sceptical than I - Why not give the benefit of the doubt (unless you know something that I don't). If Denial posts again, I would like to think that our SE folks would do their best. If he does not, then your cynicism could well be justified (and I acknowledge that Denial is a rather odd log-in name) but with the caveat that, if he is a genuine poster, he might have been frightened away already. I will simply wait to see whether Denial comes back with details.

OTOH - If people know something that I don't, how come the thread has got to 20+ messages? There was a recent thread which IMO quite clearly did not warrant a response from anyone and reached the grand total of 2 messages.

... I was ribbing you for repeating the "more details needed" several times in your post. Light hearted intent to poke fun and inject a little levity Happy

Yes, I'm skeptical because we've seen this pattern before all too often.

Why this thread has reached 20+ posts? My guess is that folks are playing along.

Feb 27, 2004 10:26PM PST

I've obviously got to get my act together Sad The thing is that I just don't understand this whole scenario. If Denial is trying revive something mischievously about women's rights in general - then that it something which has already been discussed at great length. If he has an especial problem, then we've gotta find out what it is - or give up.

I can't take this further - except to say humour is fundamental and you always put a smiley face on your posts, so I am going to do that as well! Happy

Did you read my post:
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6130-0.html?forumID=50&threadID=13574&messageID=155278

He was ridiculed right off the bat, with Glenda's belittling causing him not to post anymore. I agree with your posts attempting to help. I've been around these forums for years, and if some of these people here in SE would occasionally check the help forums there are quite a few people just like Denial who do not furnish near enough info, use very poor grammar/spelling etc.. and have to be prodded to give more.

Yes, there have been "fake" posts of a couple of people who have used different names in posting in SE. This post is different from those past type post which "some" people don't seem to grasp, but like to witch hunt, even asking "Sweden", implying this is "Charlie" posting.

There are many people who post in the help forums that use very poor grammar, spelling, and cannot type.
Heck, my wife has 2 years of college and you should see her emails when she uses one finger to type. Learning grammar, punctuation, is in high school. In fact around these parts, you don't have to finish high school to got to college, just past a test, like many of the hispanics do here. You can even get free tutoring to pass the test. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and even reading has not been a requirement to even graduate from college. Don't guess anyone has not heard of some of our sports figures with degrees who can barely read or write.

Just check the college dorms or frat houses bulletin board, and you will see good examples of poor english and spelling. Heck, just check the in-house forums that college students have printed up when you go with your son/daughter to register for college.

Yes, it is fun to bandy words back and forth - I ain't no different and enjoy this too, as long as it is for sure that it is not at someone else's expense.

I am happy to back off and leave it to you who are more expert than I in these matters. I was trying to offer the benefit of the doubt, and I hope that expert opinion does not preclude this in the future.

This is not an issue about anyone being more expert than another in spotting a fraud. There are some like you with a style to give the benefit of the doubt to excess, some of us who might jump the gun. Looking at this on its face, I just can't take Denial seriously. Even if not a rerun of one of our nuisance makers, this just not someone to be taken seriously. As a college prof I would say he/she has other more pressing issues to deal with if he/she is even remotely close to genuine. This Forum has done enough catering to the pecadillos of childish trouble makersl. We are under no requirement to cater to that element. Been there, done that, tried over and over to explain what the problems and solutions were. They weren't interested in joining this group, they wanted to conform this group to whatever their desires were.

You've helped us show are true colors with your post. It is quite telling what the response is to a request for help from someone we've never seen before. Really the only things we knew about you were you were trying to help a friend that was in trouble. I hope you appreciated that show of christian generosity that must be warming your heart still. It's good to know what each of us would do on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho.
