HELP: fast browser speed, slow connection for dif. programs

Mar 9, 2012 1:15AM PST

I'm on OS X 10.7, intel i5 macbook pro w/ 8gb DDR3 ram.

Browsing on Chrome, speakeasy clocks my speed at 1.3mb/sec for download and 0.3mb/sec for upload.

My activity monitor clocks me at 3KB/ sec download and 63KB/sec upload. Needless to say, browsing is super fast, uploading via dropbox or connecting with other programs is super slow.

Same story on multiple wireless networks. I used iAntivirus and the scan came up clean. Any ideas?

Remember this old saying?

"A man with 2 watches is never sure what time it is."

This extends to apps as well as one app may be more adept at adjusting to different connections and speeds.

--> There is one clue here. You scanned for a virus when I have yet to read there is a virus for OS X today. You may have some antivirus installed that is creating issues.

Hey Bob,

Thanks for the response.

I actually discovered a couple hours ago, right as I left for work, that I had set a maximum upload speed for some of the programs. So you are completely correct.

Also good call on the antivirus. I had not used a service previously but downloaded one off CNET today when I started having "problems." Thanks for the rational, helpful insight.

Sorry I can't guess what's different from stock settings. The best we can hope for is to lay it out in plain view and let folk comment. Then see what unfolds.

Thanks for the update.
