HELP!! External Hard Drive Issues

Sep 18, 2006 3:48AM PDT

Hi all. i purchased an external hard drive from eBay about 6 months ago, and from the start i was having this same problem. The hard drive doesn't seem to want to wake up.. i switch it on as i should but have to wait for between 1 hour and 6 hours before it does anything. To describe more... i turn it on, windows recognises it (plays USB device attached sound) and then plays the USB disconnected sound a few seconds later. I know it is working when i hear the fan kick in. Somebody help please, what could be wrong?

Could it be??

Your machine? Not a word if you have USB 2.0 ports or tried another cable. Also, your machine may have out of date motherboard drivers. Tell what version you put in.

Then again, does it work on other machines.

Hmm, it's nothing to do with my PC, tried it on 5 other computers and still having the same problem. What about taking it apart and tightening 'stuff' and then rebuilding it again. Would it help?

I'm 99% sure that it is nothing to do with my computer or a software issue, there must be some problem with the hardware but I've not heard ANYTHING about 'lazy' hard-drive

That's good to read.

Since we know it's the drive or it's housing, which part can you change out?

Hmm I can have a go, but the seller was very dodgy. Doubt i'll get any return on it - I hate powersellers from Japan, but the price tempted me too much.

Bummer....hope you've got your data elsewhere.

All things considered that low price wasn't really that good.

If you're in the US (or even overseas) try Newegg.com. Good selection, good product info good prices, etc.

Okay, first of all - thankyou for your suggestions on a possible solution but I received a reply to my e-mail which was sent to the eBay user who sold it me. It turns out that the problem is the power supply, they were straight to the point so it looks like it happens quite a lot.. cheap crap haha. Anyway they said that if I sent the existing power supply back they would replace it for a working one. Success. - - - assuming that the problem is with the power supply
