Help,DVD player will not play movies. Decoder not installed?

Mar 3, 2006 11:29AM PST

I'm using a Dell Laptop, running windows XP
When I put in a normal DVD movie it will not play and I get a message about not having the proper decoder installed, this happens regardless of which player I'm using, like Windows Media Player 10. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. You said to Install DVD player software first, I was referred to the microsoft site but all the plugins they had were for sale. Could you refer me to a good place to get the required software. Thank you for your assistance.

I think this is all due to my girlfriend deleting something in the add/remove programs that was required. So I don't want to pay for something I use to have anyway.

Bingo. "something I use to have anyway."

Reinstall your DVD player software.

Don't bother with the Microsoft site. While MS is technically correct, the answers lead you in circles. If you had PowerDVD, reinstall that, whatever it is...

If you lost the CDs, just like lost car keys you may have to pay up.
