Help determining problem recognizing hard drive

by prponnal / September 5, 2008 7:21 PM PDT

Hello All,

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m laptop which had some issues and stopped
booting up.
I was worried that the motherboard died on me.
I took out the hard drive and was able to recover the data from it.

After messing around with it laptop a little bit(removing cut speaker wires), I was able to get to the boot screen.

However, it does not recognize the hard drive now. I am able to mount the hard drive externally and view data on other computer, so the hard drive is ok.

I can boot the laptop using a Ubuntu Live CD. The laptop and the hard drive combo is not working.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I checked if the pins are ok, they seem fine to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Pras

How hard is to replace a motherboard?

Thanks Bob for the suggestion.
How hard is it to replace a motherboard for my dell 700m?
I've never done it before and the technician at work whom I talked to said you need schematic diagrams and all that stuff.

thanks

Did you look for them?

Such technical diagrams are often at dell.com. I can't see where you looked for such. Remember this is a laptop and what you learned about repairing desktops only applies a little. The one thing about laptops is there are so few parts that repairs get pricey fast.

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
