Help deciding which desktop to go with

Feb 16, 2010 3:50AM PST

I've been researching for the past week looking for a new desktop that would be right for me. I'm currently just stuck with a nearly 4 year old laptop with only 20 gb of space left so it's time for an upgrade. Anyway, I looked into everything from building my own (which I have never done and would be too worried I'd screw something up) to buying one in a Best Buy or something. I narrowed it down to either the Dell Studio XPS or the Gateway DX4831-03 (when it comes out). Here are the specs for each...

Dell XPS

the dell is more expensive but significantly faster. it has a quad-core with hyperthreading (4 CPUs, 8 threads); the gateway has a dual-core with hyperthreading (2 CPUs, 4 threads). the hd 5770 is also about twice as fast as the gt 220.

I guess the real question then is, will the Gateway work well for what I need it for or am I better off spending the extra money?

Let me share my current machine.

It's a simple HP d4999t (quad core) w/4GB RAM and the GT220 card. It runs fine here as I develop some Visual Studio windows mobile apps. Games seem fine. I paid 379 for the d4999t at geeks.com, and the shop sold me the card and Windows 7 Pro for about same. I had 2GB of RAM from my prior machine so I'm done at 750ish.

If it wasn't for the occasional game I would have not done this and just stayed on my laptop.
