Help deciding on a TV

Apr 3, 2006 5:30AM PDT

I recently moved and since I've been told my furniture may be about 3 weeks behind me I figured I have the perfect excuse to buy a new TV. The problem is I hadn't really planned for it so my budget, and knowledge, is a little light.

I've basically been looking for something that comes in for under $2500 (tax included). I'd prefer something that I can purchase from a local store since I don't want to wait on delivery. And since my receiver and speakers are a few weeks from arriving I guess I'll need a consumer model that has speakers. I've been looking mainly at either the Sony KDF-E42A10 or the Panasonic TH-42PD50U. Are there any others I should be considering, is one of those a clear winner over the other or do I mainly just have to decide if I want to be able to mount the TV on the wall one day?

Oh, and if anyone knows a good place to go in San Francisco to make the purchase that would be helpful too.

if your needs dont require perfection and dont mind getting an "off brand" (no offense stew Happy), check the reviews on the vizio p50hdm plasma. costco has it listed for $2300.

Plasma.....

.....stay with the plasma and only the top brands if you want quality picture and build. Brands like the Panasonic or Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi are all very good. You might be able to find an HDTV plasma under $2500 if you look carefully. Remember most dealers will discount the price you see if you ask.

Sorry, don't mean to step on any toes but stay away from the cheaper brands unless you want medicocre quality for a low price. This is almost a year old but you'll get the idea:

I was starting to lean towards the Panasonic TH-42PX60U which I have seen on sale at a few places for around $2300. Add in tax and shipping and it's a bit over my budget, but I'm guessing, based on your advice and the many reviews I've read online, that's it's better to spend the extra up front so that I'm not unhappy with the quality of the purchase later.

Thanks for the help.

Panasonic has the 42PX60U and 50PX60U back on their web site for ordering, fresh supply. 10% discount nad free standard shipping, which is inside the house (not to a specific location). I have hear that BB and CC will match this.

I tried the panasonic site, and BB and CC for that matter, and they are out of stock. Well, in California at least. Now I have to decide whether to order from somewhere else and pay shipping, wait, or try and find another TV that I like.

it seems like every week or so, our warehouse (chicago area best buy's) will get in like 6-10 42px60u's and 50px60u's. its very very random thats why we check literally everyday to see if we can get it or not.

i remember last friday, they were on backorder, saturday, store opened, we had around 8 to go around the who chicago area.....by the time we closed, they were out again.

since I can't seem to get cable service until early next week maybe I'll just keep checking with the local area BB to see if they get some in stock.
