Help: Connecting TV, YouView & Surround Sounds

Sep 9, 2017 6:17AM PDT

Hi there,

First time poster I'm afraid but i could really use some help. Apologies if this is straightforward and people think i should just try harder.

I've recenntly switched from a Sky box to a TalkTalk YouView box and I've had some issues getting it all connected and working again.

There are three things i would like to connect:
1. Panasonic TH-42PWD5 (yes this is quite old - but worked find before)
2. Yamaha DVR-700 Surround sounds/DVD player
3. TalkTalk YouView box.

The issue is that although i can get YouView picture on the TV - i cannot get any sound - either through the TV or through the speaker system.

I can howeber get both sound and video when playing a DVD. So i assume the issue is getting sound from the YouView Box either into the TV or into the Surround sound.

My TV does not have an HDMI connection. So i am using the YouView SCART connection into the back of the TV. It's a SCART into the back of the YouView box - then the cable splits into video and Audio L/R. All three are plugged into the back of the TV.

I'm afraid I'm really not sure if sound goes via the TV or not? I have been unable to connect the YouView box to the Yamaha system.

The other Audio option (i think?) is the SPDIF output on the Youview box - but what would i plug this into? Neither the TV not the Yamaha have an SPDIF hole.

I'm happy to simply use the TV sound for now - but can't even seem to managed that.

Manual for TV: https://panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/TH42PWD5UY-OI-Eng.pdf
Manual for Yamaha: https://europe.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/313351/DVX-700_UC_en.pdf

Any help would really really be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have three things that

Do you have the ns-psw700 ?
Sep 9, 2017 6:47AM PDT

Without that part you have no inputs to the system so that's why you are struggling.

Yes i do.

Sorry - what i actually have is a DVX-700 wich consists of DVR-700 + NS-PSW700 + NS-P700

Then it's a matter of getting all to the NS device.
Sep 9, 2017 7:10AM PDT

As the top question only noted the DVR-700, folk would say you can't hook it up.

But with the NS-PSW700 you now have inputs to the system "DVX-700."

Since I can't see where the DVX-700 has HDMI inputs like a receiver you'll have to FIDDLE and feel a little lost as you run your devices to the HDTV HDMI inputs and carry audio over OPTICAL to the DVX-700.

So that's the wiring setup but I have to decline writing about settings as it's too much to research and type here. But you have enough parts, if you have the optical from TV to DVX-700.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry i'm being a little slow. What would the optical from TV to DVX look like? I have tried plugging in red/white audio cables from the unit into the TV. Is that right?

Should i plug red/white (labelled audio in) from the AV panel on the TV into the back of the DVX?

I didn't read the TV man until now since you had a DVR-700
Sep 9, 2017 8:03AM PDT

There was no reason to since the DVR-700 meant there was no way to hookup. So now the HDTV is the problem. No audio output other than the speakers there.

https://panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/TH42PWD5UY-OI-Eng.pdf shows NO AUDIO OUTPUTS except the speaker connections.

I see not optical or headphone jacks so you are indeed right. No proper way to get this working.

So for the YouView box we have to SPLIT OFF the audio from the HDMI output of the YouView box with a device like this.
https://www.amazon.com/Musou-Extractor-Optical-Splitter-Converter/dp/B06XDNJ6RM/

The TV at https://panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/TH42PWD5UY-OI-Eng.pdf makes no mention of SCART or any other audio outputs.

So there it is, what a mess.

Hmm
Sep 9, 2017 8:21AM PDT

Had no issues when i had the Sky box. Plugged the red/white cables straight from the back of the Sky box into the back of the DVX i believe.

So that device..... i'd do the following?
1. HDMI from Youview to splt box
2. HDMI from Split box to Yamaha?
3. Audio red/white from split box to TV?

Do you know why the video (yellow cable) from the scart is working into the AV panel but the audio is not?

PS: Not sure i mentioned it in OP but although the TV has no Scart i been using a Scart to yellow/red/white cable to connect the Youvew box to the TV.

"Plugged the red/white cables straight from the back of the YOUVIEW (edited!) box into the back of the DVX i believe."

Because you wrote that, I took it that didn't work and the video needs to go to the TV which the TV does have a composite video input and you leave the red white audio jack to the DVX 700.

However the YOUVIEW (edited!) box also has an optical output so you can run that to the DVX 700 and HDMI to the TV (most likely the best setup) then find out how on the YOUVIEW (edited!) box to configure that.

-> Now that we changed from DVR 700 to DVX 700 there are a few more options. Most of what I wrote saying nope was based on your top post and saying you had the DVR 700.

No HDMI on the TV though...?

And I've done away with the Skybox. I have to use this stupid YouView thing now.

At the moment the DVR (yes R) is connected to the TV with a RGB Cable. Thats the only thing between the DVR and the TV right now. When i play a DVD I've got sound but no video. Is RGB 'Component'?

I can cycle through the inputs on the TV and AV is still only showing the YouView Video.

So both Video and Sounds work - but no sound on YouView and no video on when i play a DVD through the DVR

No problem.

https://panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/TH42PWD5UY-OI-Eng.pdf notes DVI which I've lost track of how many DVI to HDMI adapters I've used and I can't guess how you came to own this monitor or if it has that board.

In your post you called it a TV so I took it worked like a TV.

There are a LOT OF OPTIONS for the monitor and I'm not there to check which you have.

So https://www.google.com/search?q=Is+RGB+%27Component%27%3F&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 answers that but "Component Video" is not Composite.

It appears that telling me it was a DVR-700 has me write nope and I chose not to check the other pieces.

-> So here we are. How about a new post leading with the DVX-700?

Also, you would NOT use the component inputs for a Composite signal.
READ PAGES 12, 13 at https://panasonic.ca/PCS/OperatingInstructions/TH42PWD5UY-OI-Eng.pdf

But to get the YouView audio to the DVX-700 you would instead connect the audio from YouView to the DVX-700.

Sorry for the long discussion. I take folk's words literally on part numbers. I have to.

I understand now that a single letter make a big difference.

Any idea on how to connect the YouView audio to the DVX?

Any idea why the RGB from the DVR to the Tv isn't working? It used to before.

It's up above.

Connect the YouView as if it was a DVD player but the video goes to the MONITOR.

Here's the two passages and here for you to see in one place.

AUDIO = "run the audio out of the YouView to the DVX-700 audio inputs and avoid the HDMI audio extractor? SEE PAGE 19 of https://europe.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/313351/DVX-700_UC_en.pdf "

VIDEO = "you would NOT use the component inputs for a Composite signal.

Ok thanks
Sep 9, 2017 11:07AM PDT

So on page 19 i'm looking at the 'Connecting Digital AV components' section.

Looks like i'll buy an optical (which i think is SPDIF) cable to go from the YouView to the DVX and hope that works.

The signal coming out the back of the DVR has always been the Component RGB output i believe. I have not changed anything. I'm going Component Y/B/R output to Component Y/B/R input. Like at the top of the page 14.

Sorry if i am not understanding you. I'm learning terminology as i go along here.

Was not talking about the DVR 700 connection.

I'm taking this as how to add the YouView to what you have (once we got that sorted.)

Ok
Sep 9, 2017 11:39AM PDT

Can you please confirm i should buy an SPDIF cable and connect the youview box to the DVX using that?

And do you know (please) how to connect the DVR to the Panasonic TV?

Can not confirm.

Looking over the parts again once I changed from DVR 700 to DVX 700, it appears THERE IS A WAY to connect up with what you have.

-> MAYBE <-

The composite input on the monitor looks to be BNC but the manual does show how to handle that.
