Help connecting audio components

Dec 13, 2004 9:38AM PST

Any help is much appreciated....

I have a HD Magnavox 52" tv, Kenwood 5 disc CD player, DVD, VCR, cable box, and PS2 to connect to a Kenwood Receiver. I have rca plugs going from tv's output to receiver....just wondering if I am going to need rca plugs going from each piece (dvd, vcr, cable box, ps2, etc) to tv and also rca plugs from each piece to the receiver?...seems redundant but only way I can get sound from each device to get output to the receiver...

thanks for any help, its greatly appreciated!

Anne80,
Without knowing all of the inputs/outputs on each device, I will have to give you a general overview of how this should work.

1. All of the audio outputs for each of your devices (DVD player, CD changer, PS2, etc.) should connect to the audio inputs on the receiver. None of the audio outputs from your devices should go directly to the TV.

2. The video outputs for each device should go to the TV. (If your receiver has video switching capabilities, you can connect all of the video sources to the receiver instead. Then you can connect a single video out from the receiver to your TV.)

This configuration allows you to use the speakers connected to the receiver for all of the audio. Your TV basically becomes a monitor, only used for video.

Also, there is no need to connect the TV's audio output to the receiver, so you can unhook that.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU so much! I believe my receiver does have the monitor functionality, so I really really appreciate your reply....sorry for the delay in 'gratitude' here, I am not able to be on the computer as much as I'd like. I really appreciate all your help, as now I believe I will finally have everything hooked up properly. When I get a chance to try this out I'll let you know how it goes!
Thanks again!

apologies...

Sorry about that anne - it was a general statement that inadvertantly ended up sounding overly judgemental. Folks like sMoRTy71 end up putting in quite a lot of effort and all too frequently there are no follow-ups. I've noticed it more on this board than on others that I visit. I should have just said "good answer" and left it at that.

I have a similar question
Feb 18, 2005 10:34PM PST

I've hooked up all the audio inputs to my RCA RT2380, and the DVD and CD player work great. But two oddities.

In TV mode, only the TV speakers work. I have an old RCA F27689, CRT TV. Can't seem to get the audio to the HT speakers. Any ideas?

Also in VCR mode, the audio goes to both the HT speakers and the TV speakers. I can turn off the TV speakers through the setup audio processor options, but then they don't work in TV mode (and neither do the HT speakers). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if it's important, I connected our regular cable to the VCR, with a cable to the TV. Connecting it directly to the TV didn't allow the VCR to work, even with the two sets of RCA cables to the HT receiver. Thanks again.

Audio/Video Connections

sMoRTy71, you obviously have great subject knowledge. Hope you can clarify I few things for me.
a. If all the video sources (e.g. HD CableTV) are connected to the receiver (to utilize the video switching capabilities of the receiver), do you lose the HD signal? I would think a direction connection to the TV would be best.
b. Is it possible to configure the system to switch (easily) from using the TV speakers to home theater speakers?
