Help.com Forum version will be removed Thursday 12/9/04

Dec 7, 2004 8:15AM PST

Hi everyone,

In order to streamline forum production processes this coming Thursday evening 12/9/04, all of the CNET Help.com Forum branded templates will be REMOVED from the forums and reflect only a single brand, which will be the CNET Reviews version of the forums, found here: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7600_7-5565323-1.html

A few forum URLs will change, but other than that nothing in the forums as far as content goes will be altered--same great forums, just no more co brands.

So going forward the New URLs for the CNET forums will be:

CNET Forum Home page:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7600_7-5565323-1.html

Forum FAQ:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7600_7-5565360-1.html

Forum Policies:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7600_7-5565331-1.html

Forum Moderators:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7600_7-5565454-1.html

If you enter the forums through Help.com, links will still be available to get to the forums, but they will take you to the Reviews branded forums rather than the Help.com version. Eventually all Help.com forum pages will be redirect to the permanent Reviews version of the forums.

Thanks everyone!
-Lee

In addition to this, other forum tweaks added also...
Dec 7, 2004 8:52AM PST

and they are as follows:

-- Subject lines when replying to a post will be now left blank, so that user will be asked to fill out the subject line rather continue with "RE: to post" madness!

-- The subject line in the discussion tree that is being read will now be highlighted in the color red, rather than the subtle black text.

I hope these couple of simple improvement will make the forum experience a little better for our members.

Thanks all!

about the tweaks...

Those changes sound good Lee.

I was wondering if unread links in messages in the reviews template could be made bold like they were in the help template. Then they changed to unbold once they were visited. That was a nice feature.

Also, for me in this review template, the forum part initially loads in the center of the screen, then it "jumps" to the left when the ads start loading. This is annoying because it's enough time that I've started reading the post already. Is this just on my end, or is it something we have to put up with?

Hi,

I agree. I don't mind the ads at all, but always used the help template because the gray background was much easier on the eyes.

Maybe this will fix my "email this member" Problem *S*.. Still Not working with (incoming)..Can send with No Problem..
"Spam" is OFF.."Unlimited" is applied..Correct Email is listed,(You applied that for me back when last changes with Cnet were made,,Had a "email change" and it wouldnt keep it.)You fixed that..Noticed something though,,when i click to apply my "email" to login, both emails (the old and the new one) show on the dropdown..Didnt know if that makes a diffrence or not..(the correct one is listed in my Profile)
No problems with my ISP..Can send and receive all other emails..
Dont believe the Problem is on my end..
Is it possible to have someone take a look at this?
or..is it possible to reinstall it? Never know if i dont ask.
Thanks Lee.

Sumer Brez the drop down for your email address is not
Dec 8, 2004 2:30AM PST

part of our login page, this something that was added in addition to your browser, like a google tool bar or something of a sort.

I really don't know why it is not working for you, it's working for most people who are using this forum feature. And if it didn't work for other I'm sure there would be many more complaints on this.

As far as uninstalling, there is nothing you can do to uninstall this feature, it part of the forum software and has really nothing to do with your computer.

I'm going to check your registration info again to make sure the email address is correct. I'll let you know what I find and email you directly.

Never had "google toolbar" or anything like that added..
My new email and my old email both start with the letter S..When I type the S to start my login is when I see both listed.I click neither one, I continue and type in my full new email address.
Thank you for your time in this issue Lee.

Hi SB,

Sometimes you can eliminate options in drop-down boxes by highlighting them then pressing your "delete" key. I do this to get rid of old addies I don't use anymore when they appear in drop down boxes.

Hope it helps!

Lee, from the examples there is too much of that horrible overpowering orange color. I kid you not... it is so bright that my eyes hurt and it distracts from reading the posts or looking at the ads. Hopefully something can be done about this. The present amount of orange is tasteful and not overpowering.

Just my feedback! Wink

Unfortunately I can't control any of that, it is the

overall look and feel of CNET. Help.com will eventually get that treatment as well, so we'd might as well get use to it. Took a while for me to get use to, but eventually it grew on me. Happy
