Help! Choosing photo editing program for web

May 6, 2005 3:07PM PDT

Frustrated with all my photo editing software. Need to reduce picture/image size to 2.5" x 4", for example.
Also need to reduce resolution. No program does both for me, or I am missing something. Picture It 9 (I know, very very basic, does, but images come out grainy, even with more dpis. Jasc reduces picture image, but whole canvas comes with the saved file.
Not a pro web designer, so can't afford $700 program. Isn't there a program out there that will let me control image size and dpis easily. My new computer has come bundled with several software packages, and I have totally confused myself by now with which one will do what.

Using Frontpage 2003. Websites are for real estate office and cattle ranch. Not a beginner with graphic and website language and terms, but a long way from being advanced.

I use ArcSoft Photo Studio 2000
May 6, 2005 6:43PM PDT

I use ArcSoft Photo Studio 2000. It came with the computer abd it's free.

I think most computers come with a free photo editing software. The one I use, I change the image size to
333 pixels to 251 pixels. I left the dpi at 200 but I was told that if I change it to 72 dpi, It would load on the website faster. I haven't seen any difference.

There should be a free program on your computer. Try opening a jpeg and look around on the program that it opens with.

Hope This Helps

Jasc reduces picture image, but ......

Jasc reduces picture image, but whole canvas comes with the saved file.

What do you mean by that? I use Jasc for optimization of all my online graphics / photos and it's doing fine.

Jasc and image
May 7, 2005 7:28AM PDT

I must have been exhausted last night. What I was getting was a small image with a huge gray--or white background. So when I pasted what I thought was my image into my webpage, I got the little image rectangle with the huge white space around it. I worked some more with Jasc today and successfully resized images. I still need help with HOW to change the resolution. I use pictures taken by several people on several cameras and they come with a huge range of resolutions. I need to know where to go in Jasc Paint Pro to change that resolution to one that I can use on the web. Can anyone tell me where that is? Jasc help tells me ABOUT changing resolutions but does not tell me how to go about it in their program.

Optimizing with Jasc (Versions 8 and 9 - 7 similar)
May 7, 2005 10:41PM PDT

First you change the pixel size to whatever size you want - don't go too big, your longest side should not be more than 400 px. You do that under "Image" "Resize" - there you should also set the Resolution to 72 pixel/inch.

Then go to "Save As" - choose "Options" and "Run Optimizer"

The Optimizer is also accessibel via "File" "Export" where you'll find a jpg, gif, and png optimizer. It's the same process as above, I find the above more practical as I can do it as I'm saving the file.

Hope this helps.

reducing pix size
May 12, 2005 10:13PM PDT

I find that the best program for downsizing images is Irfanview.....(http://www.irfanview.com) It is free and has a tremendous amount of capabilities. You can do batch work..eg: resize every picture in a folder to say....5x7...or 4x6..etc....and set pixel...inch...etc.
It sets all your images to thumbnails so you can view all images in a folder at the same time...

Try it..you will like it..

Have you tried PHOTO FILTRE?
May 13, 2005 2:06AM PDT
http://Photofiltre.com has a freeware program called photofiltre that allows individual adjusting of canvas and image size. There is a corelation between image size and quality though because the pixels on your screen can only be so small which causes poorer quality in small images. Sizing can be found under the Image menu in this program. Photofiltre also has a large quantity of other things related to editing images that aren't found on other freeware programs. So, try it. The most it can cost is a little time. I hope this helps

Why has no one mentioned..

Irfanview ?
Best, smallest, and free editor that I know of. Perfect for web editing, like crop, resize, etc.
If you want to print some pictures, then probably need a fancier program for editing, but for web pictures, Irfanview will do it all.
Remember that if you enlarge pictures, you will almost always wind up with "pixalation", or grainy look. If you reduce pictures, well at least with Irfanview, you can sharpen them to some extent.

Picasa: Free and Easy

Picasa seems designed for you. Much of what you want is automatic in Picasa and it's designed to be easy to use and almost impossible to screw up your pics with. Try it--it's a small download!

Your profile says you use frontpage 2003, why not just use that? Some say its not the best for the job, but if your not a pro, why not use it to keep things simple?

photo editing program
May 19, 2005 12:08PM PDT

Jasc's Paint Shop pro v9 is an excellent top of the line image editing program that only costs in the $100.00 range and that's a super deal for all that this thing can do. It's really giving Adobe Photoshop a run for it's expensive price tag and does the same things.
