Question

HELP Choosing a Tablet for Work...

Sep 11, 2014 12:41AM PDT

I am trying to find a tablet that will best suit my needs. I was leaning towards the Samsung surface. It would be used in a manufacturing setting to help with ordering inventory and making notes while on the floor.

Here are my requirements I am looking for:
Office -Excel and word
Excel exporting files to another software.
Hand Written capabilities turned text
Wireless
Keyboard

Let me know if this is a good option or if there is something else that may be better. I would like to be able more efficient than having hundreds of sticky notes and pads of paper that get lost.

What tablets are in use now?

Which ones do this company's IT staff/division deploy or support?

Some want a rugged model so nod to Panasonic's Tough Tablets.

The IP Staff do not care what we use. This will be more for main office. One User-myself.

Answer
Anything but Samsung
Sep 12, 2014 11:48AM PDT

Samsung has the worst customer service and warranty policies I have ever had the misfortune to come in contact with. The worst example was a Samsung printer I bought, several years ago. The story is long and drawn out, but the short, short version is that it broke after one use, and while they did allow me to send it in for repairs, they kept it for 3.5 YEARS before finally returning it, still broken.

This isn't the only Samsung product I've ever purchased, but every one has been the same: it breaks almost immediately and never gets fixed. For your own sake, get ANYTHING but a Samsung.

If you're interested, Apple is the exact opposite of Samsung. I've had several experiences with their customer service, and it's always been phenomenal. For example, I left my iPad on the roof of the van and my wife drove off with it up there. Of course, it fell off. I found it using Find My iPad and got to it just in time to see it get run over by an SUV. (It was lying in the road all night; who knows how many others had already run over it.) I called Apple, told them what happened, and they replaced it, free of charge, no questions asked. And no, I'm not some Apple fanboy; I use whatever gets the job done. But their service is, in a word, amazing.

Answer
For Office, the tablet should run Windows
Sep 14, 2014 9:47PM PDT

Not sure what a Samsung surface is. I've heard of the Microsoft Surface.

If you want to run Office, your best bet is a tablet that runs Windows. The Microsoft Surface is an obvious choice, and has a keyboard cover.

Asus has some nice 2-in-1s, namely the Transformer Book T100. Reasonable price for a 2-in-1, low hard drive space, but you probably won't need much, and comes with a keyboard that can be detached. Cheaper than a Surface.

There are other manufacturers that make Windows tablets, such as HP, but I would suggest looking at the ASUS T100 for your purpose.

Tablet or Touch screen laptop
Sep 15, 2014 1:28AM PDT

I was told recently that i could just get a Touch screen laptop that has a flip keyboard. What would be recommended if I'm using it for large Excel files. trying to find something that could track my orders while I check them in. Also why I make purchases. Thinking about have the on order file be accessible for everyone via network so they can add to it so i don't have 10 people telling me the same thing.

I haven't figured out exactly what I want it to all do but it would be nice for it to take pictures so I can label items with bar codes and have a picture to associate the item with.

Thank you for all your help.

How would the Sony VAIO Tap 11 Tablet PC compare to the Surface Pro 3? Besides the already included Keyboard.
