Help - Capturing Video from a DVD-R Disc

Dec 8, 2004 3:43AM PST

I have recorded video on a DVD-R disc with the Panasonic VDR-M70 MiniDV camcorder. I've tried to capture for editing on my PC through a couple different applications (Pinnacle Studio 8, MS Movie Maker, etc.) with no luck. How do I capture DVD-R video on a PC for editing and movie making?

Thanks!

I have the exact same issue. In addition, my system crashes each time, I connect the USB from the camera. Did you figure a solution?

More Panasonic DVD Problems

I took the plunge based on manufacturers marketing claims and sales level tech support - Mistake! Panasonic VDR M50.

The DVD-R disks are fairly straightforward. They can be played in my DVD video player and my PC, and I can use Fleximage DVD-to-AVI for conversion to a file format I can use for editing. The camera creates sequencial files for some reason and this software will only convert the first file. Very frustrating! I ended up playing the DVD-R on my DVD video player and using the video cable, transferred the video back to a DVD RAM disk on the camera. See DVD RAM problems below. The software that came with the camera has so far proven worthless.

I have struggled with the DVD RAM disks. They are fabulous to use in shooting and editing on the camera but I cannot for the life of me get the DVD format converted off the DVD RAM. They cannot be read by my DVD video player or my DVD drive on my PC. I can see and even transfer the files to the PC through USB but for some reason, the DVD-to-AVI software will not recognize the files that were recorded and I cannot use the file format from the DVD ROM for anything other than viewing the video. Again, the software that came with the camera has so far proven worthless.

A new version of Ulead DVD Movie Factory 3 claims to let you edit this DVD material.

See if this helps you out.

Bob, a question on stability....
Dec 14, 2004 3:51AM PST

Bob, you have posted elsewhere that you use the ULead Movie Factory 2. I just ordered the Disk Creator 3.

Do you have any experience with the stability of the ULead program(s), compared to Roxio's Media Creator 7? I've heard that the ULead's are more stable, and since I own the Roxio Creator 7, I'm hoping that the ULead will be an improvement over it.

By stability, I mean having the "drag to disc" not functioning, or in some cases, not having the CD/DVD burn without errors occuring during the burn (despite all the upgrades on their software). I never had these issues with Creator 5.

I stopped using any and all CD/DVD as a disk drive some 5 plus years ago since it works about 99.99% of the time. Maybe more than that. But even 5 nines is not reliable enough for me.

I just use the old erase, then record for RW media and for the record once, I ... record once.

As to Ulead, the only complaint applies to all things video. You get to wait a lot as the glacier of video data melts.
