Help buying 3 Camera's

Dec 13, 2009 6:39AM PST

I am looking to buy 3 digital camera's.

One is for my wife. The main problem with the digital camera's we have is that it takes so long to take a picture we have the Nikon cool pix s550. We would like to be able to point and shoot multiple pictures or take on quickly. We would use the camera for every day use inside outside ect. Any of the latest features would be great HD video, wifi or what ever else is new.

The other 2 is for my kids. Again the main thing is picture taking speed.

I don't think they have built the camera you desire, yet.
I can't find anything under $1,000 that will give you low shutter lag, good low light performance, fast shot-to-shot time, and HD video.

If you forget the HD video, the new Canon S90 and G11 fit the description.

If you forget the good low light performance, the Canon SX20 or the Panasonic FX48.

Regarding camera for kids.
What age kids?
What price range?

LOL I guess I better save my money!!

What if I only wanted a fast shutter does that change anything?

Also how would your suggestion compare to the Nikon coolpix s550 I have now?

My kids are 4 and 9

For the family camera, look at the Canon SD940IS.
It is as fast as you are going to find.
And it does have HD video.
Here is the summary page from a review:

A 4-year old child can destroy a normal camera in less than a day.
I have a relative with a 4 year old and they bought a Fisher-Price camera for the boy. After 6 months, it is still working.
Here is a link:

http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Tough-Digital-Camera/dp/B00117RW98/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1260762249&sr=8-12

The 9 year old child should be able to take care of a camera and the Canon A1100 takes excellent pictures.
I bought a A1100 for a friend recently.
During the Christmas season you can probably find one on sale for close to $100.
It is not as fast as the Canon SD940IS but it is faster than the Nikon S550.

When none would be better than some

Like at age 4, what? If a toy is needed, then get him one of those disposable cameras every time he must have it. Of course, explaining that he is far too young to handle the gear would be a parental task, which is tough.

Fast shooting, hardly any shutter lag, small cost: Yes, there is a thing for that, namely an SLR packing a FILM inside. Only add some expenditure on having it developed as long as you have a suitable scanner that would digitize it in no time. As Ken Rockwell maintains, this yields the best RAW format of all.
