The most important thing is a burning program. Most dvd-rw drives come with one (like the OEM version of Nero). If yours didn't download another one from www.cdburnerxp.se.

Then find out how to make a "data dvd" in the particular program you've chosen and use that knowledge to burn the data you want to backup. It takes some getting-used-to (but what doesn't), but once you've mastered it it's not really more difficult than copying in Windows Explorer. Although a few steps more.

That means ...

a. You don't do it the right way (which is with one the burning programs I mentioned)
b. Your burner is defective.
c. The dvd-r or dvd-rw you use is defective.

Your post doesn't have enough information to decide which one applies. Maybe tell more on (a) how exactly you did it, and (b) what exactly the message is.

Not necessarily...

Depending on the burning application and mode used, +/-RW discs may have to be formatted, in their entirety, before their first use. The name of the burning software being used and the exact error message are, however, critical.
