I just want everyone to know that I have acheived the results that I wanted.
The funny thing is that I didnt have to do anything special. With a little time and patience with the software that came with the printer/scanner I am able to do respectable jpeg images at 100k and respectable jpeg photographs at 500k. The software also supports scanning directly to pdf. I like this.
I will still monitor this threat for a few days to see if anyone has ideas, but I am now satisfied.
I have a Brother MFC 5440CN. I installed everything and it seems to working fine. My problem lies with the scanning software. The problem is that the software that comes with this leaves the image size at 2+ megs as a jpeg image at 300 dpi. I want a one touch "set it and forget it" solution. This model does support scan to image, and scan to file. Scan to image will scan the image into a 3rd party software. Scan to file is the "one touch" option to save to hard drive.
Now I have tried several settings on scan to file to try and reduce the image size. This software is crappy and does not give much options, for example if I want color it MUST be 24 bit, there is no other option. There is other options as far as dpi and file format.
What I am looking for in my images is averaging about 50k per image. I would like the image to appear clear. It doesnt have to be amazingly sharp, just readable.
I have set up a dedicated machine to use as a print server. Another possible problem is that it is an older machine and I am running windows 98se on a 333 with 64 megs of ram, but like I said, its a print server... thats all.
Should I look at scan to image with a better software that can batch save a better jpeg file? if so anyone know of a lite program that does this that can run under 98? or should I look at using scan to file first, then manipulating the image after its scanned to the hard drive? again I would want a batch operation to do this to automate my scans.
Can anyone offer suggestions on which way I should go, or where to start?
Scanning software with batch save, or photo editing software with batch save?
I would appreciate any advise.
