HELP! acer aspire desktop w/vista recovery

by frogger6 / December 13, 2008 4:29 AM PST

Hello, I left my computer on overnight and woke up to a black 'windows boot manager' screen saying I need to insert a windows installation disc. The problem is Acer doesn't include such a disc with the computer.
I called technical support, but they want to charge me $30 or $40 and then I have to wait 8 business days.

The screen gives me 3 steps:
1) insert windows installation disc
2) select language
3) select "repair my computer"

I can't find a way around this screen. Shouldn't I be able to go to a recovery utility upon startup like system restore? No matter what I do, I get this screen asking for the disc.

I have a few Acers

And if you elect not to make recovery media then you call Acer and order them. Just wondering and you don't have to answer. Why didn't you make them?

As to getting around that screen, if the corruption is bad enough of the hard disk has failed there is no getting around that screen without the restore media.

I guess I figured the computer came with a recovery disc as they used to.
-Guess I'll be calling Acer back then.:(

Today it's rare to get media.

And imagine that I have a new machine here that doesn't even have a CD/DVD drive to make such with. Those new net books don't have such so I'll know next week when I plug in my HP external DVDRW drive if I can make media.

-> In closing, 30 bucks is cheap. I will disavow that sometimes you can get the media for free. Something about being nice to the support people and claiming the Erecovery won't let you make the media. Just keep going with that line on the support and while I can't assure you can get them for free, many have.

the $30 is troubling me, but so is the 8 business days. I just realized though, my mom has the same computer so I can go over to her house and make some recovery discs I assume and use those.

Does this mean I'm losing all my files though?

Thanks for your help

Where's your backup copies?

One of the things I'm seeing more and more is that many are not backing up their stuff. These machines are not reliable enough to have no backup.

If you need to get your files out, do that before you use restore media.
