voice memo.
ability to type word documents.
easy connection to a desktop- hot synced or by cable.
long battery life.
address and phone number storage.
Easy input- keyboard or graffiti- for long papers.
smallish- for storage in pocket.
easy recharge- cradle prefered.

With enough experience owning and using Pocket PCs for quite e few years now, my own personal choice would be and has recently been an HP iPAQ H2215 Pocket PC.

If that one is too expensive for you, you may as well go for any Palm.

There will be not much difference regarding battery life (some 5 hours music, even a little more, twice as much with a second battery in your pocket).

Your current criteria are low level, obviously. But whenever you deserve more (or much more), you may regret choosing a Palm. Considering that, Palm may be the best and cheapest choice for you now.

Have fun!
