General discussion

I am looking for a dig. camera. I have used many before but never owned one. I like to take nature pictures (long and short range), along with everyday use. I need to take some quality pictures (even with zoom) for a portfolio asap. I am confused between Sony Cybershot DSC-W70 or W30 and Canon A450. I also recently looked at Olympus Stylus 710 so I am completely lost now. Also which one would be better for amateurs: Sony, Canon or Nikon?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

First....I have not heard of a Canon A450.
I will assume you mean Canon SD450.

As far as overall picture quality and sharpness, here is how I would rank them:

1. A tie: Olympus Stylus 710 and Sony W70
2. Sony W30
3. Canon SD450

Which brand is better for amateurs;
Sony, Canon or Nikon?

Yeah, sorry I meant Canon SD450. I also reasearched a little bit on Canon SD650 (the picture quality was quite good), Nikon Coolpix P4 and also the Sony DSC-T9.

any suggestions?

You mentioned the Canon SD650.
I have not heard of this model.
There is a Canon SD700 which has Image Stabilization.

As far as picture quality and sharpness, these three are very close together. All good.

I have read a review on the Nikon P4 and it shows a disappointingly slow shutter lag of 1 full second.
The shutter lag on the Canon SD700 and the Sony T9 is only 0.3 second. For me, that would rule out the P4.

So that leaves the T9 and the SD700.

I would have to toss a coin to choose.

I dont know why Im getting confused with names. Sorry again, it was a Canon SD630 not 650. And thanks for the info on the coolpix, I was leaning towards it before knowing that.

Thanks again.

It appears that Samsung has just about abandoned the digital camera market in the USA.
If you go to their USA website, you will not even find digital cameras mentioned.

Samsung digital cameras are active in Europe and England.

No Samsung digital cameras have been reviewed in the USA for some time now. The last reviews were not kind to Samsung digital cameras.
