If it's a CD-ROM

Then that explains why it won't deal with DVD media. Aside from physical similarities, CDs and DVDs are very different beasts. DVD-ROMs can generally read CDs, but not vise versa.

I do have to admit it's been a long time since I've come across a CD-ROM that won't read a CD-R disc however. Are you sure it's not CD-RW? Up until into the Pentium II days, there were still plenty of new systems shipping with CD-ROMs that couldn't read CD-RWs. If it is a CD-R and not -RW, I'd look to how the disc was created. Since you offer no clues as to any of that, I can't even speculate.

Well...

The lg gcr-8523b is a standard CD-ROM drive, and a CD-ROM drive cannot read DVDs, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, etc. The drive you have can only read CD, CD-R, and CD-RW, but cannot burn/write data to any disc. That explains why DVDs are not being recognized.

As to the CD-Rs, they may not have been burned properly (have you tested tham on another computer?) or the drive may be failing. (It is quite old, and the warrenty expired long ago.) Best advice I could give is to see if store-bought CDs are readable and check Device Manager is setting off any yellow flags concerning missing/corrupt/inappropriate drivers.

Hope this helps,
John
