General discussion

Been gone for a while due to health and computer issues. Health is getting better but still a ways to go, and the computer? Well, I'm at a loss. Where to begin?

1st, I have a Dell 4400 Dimension Pent IV. I'm running Windows ME as I already have enough trouble without opening anymore backdoors to people. It now has 512K of memory, but was running 256K. I had hoped the boost would help, and it did for a few days, but now, the computer is back to it's old ways again. It seems there's something gobbling up my memory. I have no idea what. I run Spybot and Ad Aware daily. Since I have AOL, I have the McAfee firewall and anti virus programs. I also run a scandisk and defrag weekly along with the AOL clean-up program. I wanted to run HiJack This, but my copy no longer works and I can't seem to locate it's site anymore.

My problems all started way back when. AOL had sent me an upgrade to their 9.0 Security Edition. I downloaded it and went to install it. CRASH! I lost everything. System Restore didn't help. I then found out (from AOL) there were issues with the upgrade but they still sent it out. I also found out (again thru AOL) that their data banks had been hacked.

Since that time, I have been experiencing freezes, lost info, info/files/email out and out disappearing and almost everything you can imagine. To me, it seems that something is going on in the background. Wheather or not it's spyware/malware, or someone has hacked into my system, I have no idea. That's why I was trying to get to HiJack This.

Spybot congratulates me almost daily, and I immunize weekly. Ad Aware shows me 6 to 21 items daily, which I take care of. Again, the memory boost helped for a few days (3), but now I'm back to the same old garbage. Example: My son and I are into restoring old military vehicles. We have a rare WW II truck. Finding info on it is hard and finding pictures of what it looks like when complete is something we need so we know how to proceed. When I try and download a picture, or for that matter, post one, FREEZE!

It also seems that when I try and add any protection type programs, it also freezes up, like getting here too. Now this may be paranoia, or maybe there's some bug inside fighting against me trying to fix this thing? Any advice or direction before I just shoot this thing?

Welcome back to CNET Ugg, I remember you

In reply to: HELP

and I'm sorry to hear about your health problems. We don't do the HJT logs here at CNET but that is probably a good idea so someone can actually SEE what is on your computer. Here is the where and how to do so and good luck to you. Please let us know how you make out. You already have some of the tools on the list and I don't think that MSAS will work on ME but this is a premade post so please make sure you have whatever is on the list that your OS can handle.

HJT is a very powerful tool and only advanced users should use it.

Please post your HJT logs in one of the following HJT forums:

- http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=18
- http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7

Attention: You have to register to be able to post your HJT log !!

HijackThis download locations:

It is important that you run HijackThis.exe in its own folder so the backup files that HijackThis creates will not be accidentally deleted.

Open 'My Computer', then double-click to open C:\ (or the drive letter that your Windows is installed on)
In the menu bar, click File-->New-->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to ''HJT'' or ''HijackThis''. Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Click 'Scan' button. Click 'Save log' button. Save the 'hijackthis.log' in your desktop. Copy and paste the content of 'hijackthis.log' and post the log file in any forums that offers HijackThis analysis.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do not fix anything yet.

BEFORE you post your HJT log - it would be appreciated if you would :

Download and install the following programs, If they're not on your computer, yet:
- AdAware SE : http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
- Spybot 1.4: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
- CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php
Download CWShredder: http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
and put it in it's own folder, f.e. 'C:\CWShredder' or C:\Program Files\CWShredder'
- Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta:

Please be PATIENT - For those of you looking for assistance with HJT logs, please be patient. The experts are really swamped with requests to have logs reviewed etc. If they do not get with you immediately it only means they are helping someone else. Remember they do this free of charge and in their spare time so please be patient.

Thanks for the info. It's good to be remembered (hopefully in a positive light). Yep, now I'm playing "CATCH-UP". Of course, none of the catch-up projects are easy or even co-operative. So what little time and ability I have is all used up. Also because of insurance changes, I have to train a whole new batch of doctors. Hopefully I'll get a chance to run these programs in the next day or so, and when I find something out I'll let you know.

Thanks Again

Well, I'm posting this from a different computer if that's any indication as to how things are going. Yep, there's never a dull moment in Uggville. If anyone sees my birth Father, Joe Btfsplk (from Lil Abner fame, yeah, I know I'm dating myself), tell him I said "THANKS!" The ongoing saga;

I started to try and download CC Cleaner and CW Shredder, key word: TRY, couldn't do, computer wouldn't let me. Then, AOL crashed. When I finally got it back, all my emails and saved places were gone, poof, disappeared. After several tries, I couldn't even get AOL back at all, so I called AOL to see if there was a problem at their end (not unheard of).

Nope, it was all on me. I spent well over an hour with the tech. Bottom line, uninstall AOL and reinstall it. Hey, wasn't that when my troubles began? So, like a dummy I attempted it. The uninstall was sucessful, but for some reason the install wouldn't take.

The tech suggested a defrag and try again as I was still able to access the net via exploder, er, explorer. I rebooted into safe mode and tried to defrag, key word; TRIED. I was told it needed to run scandisk 1st. Okay. Hmmm, while I'm at it, I'll do the deep scan instead of the standard. SMART MOVE ACE!

Fast forward 12 hours. It has just reached 1 million files scanned of the 1.220 million files. When I go back an hour later, it's all froze up. No problem, I'll reboot. Guess again. It's not happening. Nothing! NADA! NIX! NFG!

As it tries to start up an error message keeps popping up. Rpcss????? Now what? Where's the shotgun? I don't know, I think it's time for professional help. I hope this guy I'm using don't get sick on me. I hope the ghost in the machine upstairs doesn't find it's way down into the basement and find me. Wish me luck.

Another option is getting another hard drive, making it the C drive, and the old one D. That's what I did to the computer I'm on now. It means several days of futzing with the OS and programs if I was able to do it straight thru, but in my case, a month if I'm lucky. Of course all the sales are over and I'll have to pay big buxs. Something was telling me to get another HD during XMas time. I.J.F.F.! (It Just (Fill in the blank) Figures.) ;>)

I'm glad someone else besides me is laughing, but I have a good excuse, I'm on medications. ;>) Besides, my family thinks I'm just plain crazy. Ya know, maybe I should become a writer. The Mrs always said I should write children's stories (she hasn't heard some of my good stuff), and when I recently related about my son's and my little adventure picking up an old army truck from the government and driving it 1400 miles back home, I was told the same thing that you mentioned. Hmmmm, now if I can only find out where to apply. 8>0
