HELP!!

Jun 7, 2005 8:36AM PDT

I have a dell pc (6 months old) good spec but not sure what.

This evening a trip switch went and our power cut out in my house so the pc was switched off.
I have turned it back on and it has gone totally wierd.
I can still log on as me with my password still the same, but when I have logged in the desktop is as new and everything seems to be back to factory settings (favourites gone from IE, desktop icons missing etc)

When I click on my documents it is entirely empty, not even got standard 'my music' or 'my pictures' folders.

If however I click on my computer, c:\, documents a settings, rob molyneux, it has all of my files, all my music, all my documents and everyhting there.

Does anyone know what has gone on or how it can be rectified without reinstalling and losing all of my data, I have thousands of songs etc.

I thought I might just live with it, but it wont let me put a picture from 'my pictures' as my desktop so I'm a bit worried.

any help would be much appreciated.

Backup, backup, backup.....

this is the lesson to be learned from this episode. Your hardware is fragile and copies of those precious files should be stored on CDR/DVDR or other places.

As to your problem, I would look in the Users page of Control Panel for your missing account. If it's still there, try logging off and back on to it.

Oh gee thanks buddy, I'm glad you could be of help to me, but to be honest I dont need smart **** comments, I could actually do with some helpful information.

Anybody get any help, I dont mean to be rude, but the I told you so comment could have come after i'd solved, or at least attempted to solve the problem.

You appear to be caught up....

with the backup reminder. That's unfortunate because anyone who has a good backup plan will not worry about recovering lost files.

In any case you have not reported what is in the Users folder, it might lead to a solution.

No 'smart **** comments' here...

you can solve your problem by right clicking on each of those files and folders and using the security tab to take posession of them.

Or you could try Michael's good advice to check Users page of Control Panel.

I didnt mean to get so bothered but its been a really long day and this was the last straw.

I've sorted it, basically by creating a new user account and copying all of the files into that, then deleting the account i had been using.

Its worked a treat and only took a few minutes to do, didnt lose a thing either.

thanks for your help anyway guys, much appreciated, even if it doesnt seem so!!

If your data and time are important, invest in a UPS (uninterruptible power supply).
