HELP!

Feb 1, 2004 10:09PM PST

Bob,
my 'joy' was premature!
all the problem reappeared (the most disturbing is AVG
disabling!)
scanned system32 and found:
2 AGBOT.XX worms and one Lovesan.A virus
already removed before!!
I thought SP4 takes care of this!?

No. Microsoft doesn't patch such...fast enough.

The issue is simple. When you install NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and such, Microsoft's OS is open to infection the moment you connect to the internet.

You get to remove the bugs after the patches and then re-infection (by these bugs) is prevented.

You still need to disable extra services and consider using the TCP/IP security panel to lock out PORTS that you don't need exposed to the internet PLUS your favorite Antivirus.

I'll give shorted answers since this is old ground.

1. You still need to disable extra services

Type in BLACK VIPER SERVICES WINDOWS 2000 at http://www.google.com

2. consider using the TCP/IP security panel to lock out PORTS that you don't need exposed to the internet PLUS your favorite Antivirus.

This is part of the OS. You would read the book you use to learn about the OS or press Start, Help and Support and try words like TCPIP SECURITY

Since the settings are a personal choice, I will not be able to tell you which to enable.

Bob
this W2K drives me nuts
suddenly lost my internet connection!
no virus or parasite this time
had to run W2K repair mode (perhaps for the fifth time!)
never had anything like it with Me (over 3 years)
and W2K is supposed to be an excellent OS
or am I simply unlucky...

New pests.

One of the new problems is the sheer number of pests and parasites. I don't know what the next few months hold as we see MyDoom.B which not only infects the machine, but promptly disables the tools you may use to eject it.

A pest could have pulled your internet "plug."

As to Windows 2000 being an excellant, OS, I fear I agree. But you are on the edge with 64 Megabytes of RAM which I have never tried to use it at.

but low RAM affects just speed, no?
is firewall my solution?

For instance.

1. RAM being so low may cause a WinModem driver to fail. WinModems offload DSP work to the CPU, but in low memory machines can be seen to fail, stop working and cause a post just like yours.

2. WHAT! You don't have a firewall?

How clear can I make it that Windows NT, 2000, XP and for the foreseeable future Microsoft OSes have open issues?

And it's sad to read this post since even using the native TCPIP security could have you dodging most threats without installing any software such as ZoneAlarm which at 64 MB could be pain in itself.

I want to see you succeed.

Bob
