Heat sink removal

Dec 29, 2004 10:24AM PST

Well, it certainly looks easy. Want to remove my CPU heat-sink/fan so I can return the mobo (K8V model) to Asus for replacement. This is socket 754 and Athlon 64. Only 1 clip, which I had no problems installing. Now it doesn't want to leave the warm confines of the board. Unlatched both ends of the clip (it's just rattling around loose). Try to lift it off the CPU and it doesn't budge. Will wiggle around a little but can't begin to raise it. Has anyone out there ever experienced this? Naturally, I'm reluctant to use any force for fear of cracking the board and voiding the warranty. Hope someone can help me.

Usually a twist...

side to side is enough to break the bond created by the thermal pad or compound. As a last resort I might use a small screwdriver with a protective cloth to try and pry it loose. Carefully!!!

"Just a twist, a flick of the wrist --"

Yup! After it sat for awhile, a gentle twisting, lifting movement at one corner was all it needed. Thanks for the response, Mike.
