Since this is usually an analog connection it's not possible to "detect" a mic. However looking around it appears this used a combo jack. It's all over the web too.

I have a Lenovo Y50 with Windows 8 and a plantronics gamecom 307 headset. When I use the headset the speakers work fine but the computer never detects the microphone. I noticed that on the ports I use one has a symbol of a headset with a microphone and the other says s/pdif. I tried putting the microphone plug in the headphone port and the computer said something was plugged into the audio port but the microphone was still not listed under the recording devices. How can I get the microphone working and use both the headphone speakers and microphone at the same time?
