Question

Headset interference (between mic and speakers)

May 6, 2014 8:17AM PDT

Hello,

I own a Steelseries Siberia v2, and after couple of weeks of using it, i noticed my microphone stopped working. The earphones still work, but the microphone doesn't.

The interesting thing I noticed is that I can get the microphone to work, but only if the earphone(green) 3.5mm jack is not plugged in. That way i can hear the microphone on an other earpiece i connect to my pc or on the pc speakers.

When the two are plugged in together, all I can hear if a noise which changes frequency and intensity as I move the volume control wheel up and down.

One more interesting thing (yes, there is more) is that when the microphone only is connected, the volume control works normally, even the mic toggle works. However, when the earpiece only is connected, the volume control has an inverse function, min sound is max, and max sound is min. Also note that before, when both worked together, the mic on/off toggle wasn't working at all.

The error came out when I installed win8 on my machine, but I did a lot of troubleshooting with my drivers, and on another win7 machine which I know that works normally. I even combined it with another headset, and got the aforementioned results.

Thanks for your help in advance guys, appreciate it very much.

Cheers,
-Ivan

Trying to fix it

Thanks for the advice, but since i bought it for a similar price just two months ago, I'd like to make this work.

I was hoping someone would know what exactly causes this interference, so i can open the headset up and meddle around with it until it works. I also noticed that the cable connection on the volume control doesn't look like it's supposed to, so I really don't know where exactly is the problem.

So you are an electronics tech.

Open and investigate. The chances of someone that repaired such a headset is slim so let's see if anyone pops in.
