Take this up with your computer support people. Show them the problem and let them work it out.
Again, this issue is one you see all over. Causes and cures are too varied to give you an exact answer. Replacing the machine with one that does not do this is the cheap fix at the office but there we PAY dearly for IT support so we do the math and when we see we will pay about half the new machine price we replace the machine.
Or reload the OS. In the office on some machines we have images which makes this easy.

i am a visually impaired user. i use a dell inspiron B20 with xp and jaws 7.0 screen reader. i use a set of headphones all the time. recently i got a set of specially designed games for the visually impaired that uses sapi. i notice that after about an hour the sound to the headphones cut out however the computer speaker still works. to solve the problem i have to shut down the computer and restart manually. what could be causing this.
