HDTV connections with HDMI

Oct 24, 2009 11:32PM PDT

I just purchased a Panasonic TCP-42S1. I already own a Panasonic upconverting DVD/VCR combo. I am going to get a HDTV cable box. I want to connect all three using HDMI cables. I found the following URL on the web. Please tell me if this is the best way to connect my components.

Thanks everyone!!

If the TV has the inputs, use'em.

Does this diagram...

...depict your actual components with all inputs/outputs depicted, or is this a general sort of diagram? You may be able to increase the video quality if you let us know the actual make/model numbers of your cable box and DVD recorder.

Thanks. The dvd/vcr combo is model# DMREZ475V. The Cable box is a Scientific Atlanta explorer 4250HD.
Yes, this is a general diagram. It's the only thing i could find that matches my components.

thanks.

2 HDMI ports

It looks like the TV you purchased has 2 HDMI ports. With your upconverting DVD/VCR(I assume that is a combo unit with 1 output), you can plug that into HDMI INPUT #1 and the HD Cable Box into HDMI INPUT #2. You shouldn't need to further upconvert the signal from the HD Cable Box, as that should already be sending a HD signal in 720p or 1080i.

Thanks. Do I still need to connect the cable box to the bvb/vcr combo with RCA plugs?

Thanks again.

upconvert with component cables

I believe the upconverting feature is dependent upon using component video cables (R/G/B). AFAIK HD signals won't pass via the regular yellow RCA video cable.

Box to DVD/VCR

I have a similar set up with my Cable box and DVD player/recorder. I have the HDMI running from the box to the TV. To record TV shows to DVD I also have the cable box running composite(only input for the dvd recorder, it sucks but better than nothing) to the DVD recorder. From the DVD recorder I run another HDMI cable running to the TV.

That is how I imagine you can get your setup working also. Good luck.

It's a bare bones player with hardly a HDMI port to be found Happy

Component will work (almost)just as well. No big deal.

You're confusing...

Component (R/G/B) with Composite (Yellow). To upconvert it would require a Component connection. [Said sensei to his young apprentice Wink ]

This is exactly what I did and everything works great! Also when I picked up my HD cable box the tech in the store told me the same thing.
Thanks for your help.
